My 3 month old Gold-laced Wyndot is acting off. I had three hens in a cage outside near my coop for my older hens but separate. One girl died virtually overnight. She was fine in the morning one day and dead the next morning. No signs of anything visible wrong. I thoroughly scrubbed the cage and everything in it. I moved it to a different area. And the two other girls have acted fine.
Now about a week later another one is acting sickly. I went out today and she wouldn't get up. I got her out and looked her over. Again, nothing visible. No mites. No injuries. No problems with her vent. She was kind of panting, but it is wicked hot here. They have plenty of water and food. The cage is in a covered area with shaded places to be 24/7 and sun for portions of the day in other areas. It is large, 8x4. Her breath doesn't smell weird or anything. Any ideas? Worms maybe? Can I worm a young one like this? Can I get that OTC at a feed store?

Oh, and I did bring her inside in my sick cage. She has moved a bit more after being in for a few hours. She had eaten some feed and drank a bit of water. I did add some apple cider vinegar to her water inside.

I would suspect coccidiosis, which is common at this age until the chickens develop some immunity to the organism. Corid or amprollium from the cattle medicine aisle of your local farm store is the treatment. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid, or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water, and treat all chickens for 5-7 days. Symptoms of coccidia are lethargy, puffing up, diarrhea or blood in stools, and eating/drinking poorly.

That sounds just like what she is doing. Should I treat the older girls too? I have some that are 3 years old and others that are 7 months old.
