What?! Dang it I totally would have gone for that. Even for 1 bird knowing it’s a hen! Ugh. The heartache on not having to rehome a possible roo would be worth the $45 alone! I really need a bigger coop!
I bred Silkies for a few years. While individual markets vary... I would not sell any pullet near laying for under $30 for an average color and decent quality with correct features. For a more rare color and good quality, I would not go lower than $50... and I am not NPIP. If I were, price would be higher to reflect that effort. I think my prices are actually cheep and fair.. but I just do this as a hobby. I did secretly laugh when someone offered $100 for the Marans flock of 5 (including the cockerel) I currently have for sell for $225.
I think those prices are very fair! Heck if one of my silkies was a female and I had to feed and clean up extra chicken poop in the coop for all that time up until it was close to laying, I would not be doing that for cheap! Chicken chicken isn’t horrible expensive but it all adds up and the labor can get taxing! Let alone the females are of course more in demand. I don’t even want to tell you how much I spent on my DNA tested show-line silkie. I just couldn’t go through possibly having to rehome another roo.
