3 murdered hens...advice please

farmer's wife :

Listen, if you don't want to shoot the dog, but you do want to get rid of it, pour some antifreeze in a pan, and let the little darling drink it. he'll die, your chickens are safe, problem gone.
personally, I keep a gun in my kitchen closet for just such emergencies. I've shot several foxes, dead, chased off coons, skunks, & stray cats. I have a right to protect what is mine, and so do you !

Advise about poisoning is immoral, inhumane and illegal.

If you have to kill it, kill it instantly.

Using poison, spray painting, and sometimes shooting a dog can land you in more hot water than you might think. A lot of animal rights groups have pushed for harsher laws so that people can't abuse dogs this way. Depending on where you are you can get fines or even jail time.

Your best bet is to secure your chickens and when the dog comes back simply detain it and call animal control. They will then take the dog and not release it back since the family previously said they got rid of the animal.

If these people have made threats against you, your family, or your pets you need to file a police report. It may come to nothing but you at least need that evidence to back you up later.

Every altercation and every instance should be documented and on file with the police as much as possible so that if something does happen you have the law on your side.

:/Through the years,i have had alot of chickens. Some of which i liked, and some that were too stupid to even deserve a spot in my barnyard.I have found, that from the day they are hatched, they are eagerly searching for the quickest way they can find to meet their demise. They will scurry out in front of moving automobiles, they will eat anything that looks appeaealing to them, regardless of how toxic it may be,ive witnessed them trying to steal dog food from the very beast that already murdered most of their siblings. What it boils down to is,if you have chickens, and you want to keep them alive, you have to have them in a pen ,that they cant escape from ,and that predators cant breech.Sorry about your chickens,But lets face it,they are just chickens, they cant take care of themselves.

i am so sorry to hear about your loss, mine are pets also. i dont have a prob with preds mine never leave thier dog kennel. alot of people want to free range thier chickens but these days you cant cause of people like that. since you have a prob with a dog dont ever let your chicks out to roam cause it maybe a hawk next time. im very paranoid when it comes to my girls. again i am very sorry about your loss

Oh My Gosh I am so so sorry. :-(

Another persons pets "cat/dogs" going on to someone else's property and killing another's pets is not nature. It is the fault of the people that own the attacker.

I have a lot of pets and I keep them safe most of the time, but I do let them free range during the day when I am home and if I am cooking supper or even go answer the phone and something comes and attacks my pets on my property and injures or kills one before I get out side would not be my fault.

We are lucky I do have covered runs for night or when we are not home.
A lot of people on this board are loving pet owners and can not afford to build a fort Knox for their birds.
Please don't feel guilty "you clipped their wings and you trusted in the fact that you were told the dog would be taken care of"

I hope you do not have any more problems and I hope you can make improvements to your setup.
Electric fence may be an answer for you. And cheap netting over the top to keep the birds in.
Never stoop to their level just buy or borrow a large live trap. trap the dog and call the dog warden to come and get it.

Hugs

One of my husband's co-workers had a bunch of meth losers move in next to him. Cars came and went all the time. The people were trash. One night when there seemed to be a bit of a crowd over there, he took one of those little red laser pen lights and shined it in their window. He said they all came running out like cockroaches, got in their cars and drove off. I guess they thought the cops or rivals were taking aim with high powered rifles.

Horsejody if the thought of a house full of meth losers wasn't so scary this story would be funny. And I guess the idea of them all coming "running out like cockroaches" is in a sense funny.

wouldn't ya thought? It's too bad they didn't tape it for 1st the cops & then for youtube..... LOL

Thank you everyone for your condolences, advice and encouragement! My daughter and I have read and reread this post many times, and you all have made us feel much better. The latest: we have fined them $1200 via animal control, and we have two live traps set up near our rooster (who lives in a dog kennel at this time), as that is where the dog was last seen, harrassing the rooster.

If I catch the dog, I honestly don't think I can kill it, although I am SO angry....I will probably take it to an animal shelter, maybe even one in the next county. As far as their illicit activities go, these are some pretty scary people, and I would hate to be caught 'spying' on them. They have already threatened our dog (who cannot go out unsupervised/unleashed) and I just don't trust them one bit. I am positive they would retaliate.

Thank you again, everyone. it makes us feel better just to know that there are other people who feel the same way about their birds as we do ours
