34 Orp Eggs in the 'Bator - 16 Orpingtons!! Woot!!

During last nights storm I went up to check on the babies and the 2 eggs in the bator. Both were alive, peeping and moving. I noticed the beak exposed on one chick was foaming. I kept watching and checking and the mouth was coninuing to foam. I took the egg out and wrapped it in warm wet papertowels. I chipped back some of the shell and peeled back some of the membrane. The chick had a huge spongey fluidish lump on its neck. It was gasping for air and still foaming. As I opened the shell more the chick unfolded and raised it head. It took two gurgling breaths and then died in my hands. The growth/tumor/spongey sac on the neck I am sure would have created many problems had the chick hatched on its own. Had it not died I am sure I would have had to cull it.

The last chick is still in the bator, partially hatched and sleeping alot. It is a very late bloomer and I don't know if it will make it.

The other 15 are in the brooder and very healthy.

8 BO and 7BBS and 1 BBS still waiting. I hope it finishes hatching.

Over all this has been a very good hatch. The BBS eggs came 3000 miles from the wets coast and to have so many hatch from very fragile eggs has been wonderful. I have had eggs come from closer areas and had 0 hatch. This hatch has been a really great success!

Angie, that is what happened with the Welsummer that pipped and zipped partway in my last hatch, the foaming part. Not sure of the cause, but same experience. Anyway, congrats on your hatch!​

congratulations on your babies! they are quite lovely. I noticed in your pictures that after you took them out of the turner you put them in a cardboard carton to hatch in. I can see that it worked fine you. thats really interesting because i thought they had to be laying on their sides to hatch.? that is a good way to keep the others from rolling the eggs that are trying to hatch. I think thats what killed some of mine the last time. I believe i will try this. thanks for the advice you didnt even know you were giving! lol!!!

16 is out!! I think it is a splash!

What do you think, Christina? Look how tiny and innocent this new life is. (Yes, I am crying. I did not think this baby would make it.)

That is 8 BO's and 8 BBS's. Yayyyyyy!!

It acts very healthy. It is a tiny bit sticky and is in the brooder. The bator is empty.

Once it is sterelized in go goose eggs - sebastopol and dewlap toulouse!! Woot! for me!
