37 chickens dead

Quote:
This worked for my dad as well when I was a kid. It was goose. It was awful.

I'm with those who are hoping you will allow cool down time before you make a decision regarding the spouse or the dogs. I am really sorry for your loss, I really do not know what to say, I can imagine how sick you must feel.

It is funny how chicken people are so often married to non-chicken people...we just do not understand each other, but end up together anyway.

WoW !!! don't really know what to say,, sorry ya got a husband that has no ears,, feed your husband chicken for dinner until there all gone

I haven't heard the whole "once a dog tastes blood..." line since my Grandpa passed away.

I'm sorry for your loss, but do agree with those who have said it is not the dogs' fault. Nor your husband's. He got up in the middle of a nap -- probably half asleep -- and probably mindlessly stumbled to the door and let the dogs out in habit. I don't think it has anything to do with having or not having "regard" for you or your things. It has to do with being human. If that's a crime, lock me UP!

It sounds like once you had time to grieve you got your head about you and are on the path to recovery.

Huskies have a very high prey drive. It's something that has to be considered when combining dogs and fowl or other small animals. You can't punish the dog for it's natural tendencies. Well, you can but it's both futile and foolish. We have a dog -- a mutt -- with an incredibly high prey drive. You just have to deal with what you have, or make a choice -- dog or chickens. IMO, whichever came first should trump, but at the same time there should be a very big lesson learned here -- consideration when combining two types of animals. A simple google search will tell you what breeds do and do not tend towards having a high prey drive -- there are exceptions to every rule, of course but it's a good starting point. Don't buy a dog whose need to chase and kill is bred in and expect it not to want to do just that.

troyerbuilding....my husband 'vowed' his life to me but it didn't mean a hill of beans. God made more chickens and men.

On a much more pleasant note I want to commend everyone who offered to send new chickens and chicks. Such a generous gift. It brought tears to my eyes. There is still more good in this world than bad and it's nice to see proof of that.

I'm sorry this happened to your flock. I know you tried your best to prevent it.
My advice is:
#1 Lock up the dogs.
#2 I see you already had it out with the hubby.
#3 Give yourself some time to grieve.
#4 Forgive your husband and the dogs, no one is perfect.
#5 Move on... whatever that means for your dogs/chickens is up to you.

If you want eggs from my flock, I will send you whatever you like free of charge.

If the black cochin girls were part of this, I can (eventually) get you cochin mixes from their "sisters". They are not technically related as yours were black and mine are barred, but they were from the same 'batch' and were raised together and have the same personalities. Only 1 of the three have started laying and none of my boys are showing interest in them yet, so it would be a bit. I do not have Cochin boys, only a Jersey Giant roo (top roo), Blue Andalusian (middle roo) and RIR (bottom roo), so those would be the possible crosses.

I can't imagine how horrible it must have been to find all of that. I had one of my own dogs rip apart a small chicken tractor, but I heard something and went out there and caught it in the act. Although the single chicken in the pen was loose by then, he had not injured her (go figure). I got really lucky....it could just as easily gone the other way.

Aside from that, you are always welcome to any of my eggs or I could even (attempt to) hatch out some of the chicks for you. But the only ones that could be pure would be Jersey Giants. The rest would be mixes.......

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

Sorry for the novel... I've been thinking about this thread since I posted yesterday, and now I had something to say. It just irks me when people think of animals as disposable possessions that can simply be taken to the pound when they do something we don't like. Sure, give the problems to someone else, like relocating a raccoon or snake. I'm sure there are people that disagree with me... I'm not out to provoke or argue... that's just my humble opinion. I treat all my animals like my own kids. Maybe that's a problem, but at least I know my "kids" are cared for and happy. Shoot, 9 times out of 10 they all eat breakfast before I do! LOL! But we take ownership of the responsibility when we get pets, not just the pets, and it's up to us to train them and protect them.
OK... done now... stepping off the box...
