Update! The babies are doing great! Pokey's new name is Hope and her younger but bigger amd bossy sister is Faith.
We moved them to a temporary brooder last night. They had no interest in the starter feed and water, and called for me quite a bit and several times throughout the night. Finally at 3 am I put some water in their starter feed to make it soft and they started eating it and drinking water. Now they're quiet and sleeping at 5am, just in time to get ready for work. Yay!
I'm wondering if there's a heat source that doesn't put out so much light as the heat lamp. Thought that might settle them into a normal sleep pattern. Any ideas?
The other 3 eggs are still in the bator with safety holes, but didn't hatch. One was questionnable at 2 weeks and again at lockdown. I think it stopped developing sometime between the second and third week. The second seemed better but not as active at lockdown. And the third appears to have pipped internally and didn't make it any further. So happy to have Hope and Faith, but sad for these other little guys.
I want to thank all of you so much for your wisdom and support. It's kind and generous people like you that make the world a better place.
They are precious. Sorry the others didn’t make it. Check out the Premier heat plate on Amazon I am using it this year for my two whose names are Faith and Grace by the way. They really like it.
For a non light heat source, I use a ceramic heat emitter, aka reptile bulb. It screws into the clamp light fixture. They come in different wattages. My chicks sleep all night when it's dark. I paid about $7 for mine on Ebay.
