They are hens that are crammed in to cages and lay eggs until they are 18 month old and are the considered as "spent" so are sent to slaughter. Hens in the cages also die of infection and if they are trapped in the wire, they are left to starve to death and eggs end up being laid on the hens dead body and are then put in peoples boxes to eat. If you buy eggs from a supermarket it usually says on the label "Fresh eggs! and then in small writing it will say "from caged hens". Its a disgusting industry.

Yeah, ever gotten eggs from the grocery store? If the carton didn't say "From Free-Range Hens" or "Free-Range Eggs" on it,the hens you got the eggs in that carton from were most likely stuffed in cages the size of a 11" and half by 8" piece of paper, with 3 or 4 hens a cage. Most likely Red Sex-Links for brown eggs and White Leghorns for white eggs. The beaks are cut off,the combs and wattles dubbed. Roosters are burned alive. Hens when they are done producing are scalded in hot water. Usually that kills the chicken but the ones who make it out alive are stuck in the neck vein with a knife. The cartons that even say "From Free-Range Hens" or "Free-Range Eggs" doesn't necessarily mean the chickens range on grass, most likely it is cement in a building or if the hens are lucky, dirt.

If it says "free range" they aren't in cages but that doesn't mean they are in/kept good condition! The male chicks in the UK are threw alive into a mincer, its awful.
