3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Okay, I just had one more chick hatch this morning.

Of course, it's a green singer finch,

I can't get in to take a photo (closed grass nest, top bank of cages, hen still on the nest with her second egg), it's too upsetting initially to the parents.

Here's a video of how they look. Not my video, but a typical green singer clutch.

Some of my finches produce naked babies, green singers always remind me of little Albert Einsteins.

Thanks, they're not the flashiest birds around (can't hold a candle to many of my other finches for coloration), but as said in the name of the finch, they can SING! They'll put any canary to shame and in fact are crossed into lines of canaries to improve their singing abilities. I currently have two males, the father and one of his sons. Sometimes they get going and the singing is so loud you can't hear anything over them. But beautiful!

I'm just about to grab my headphones and watch a few videos of them singing. Since it's 7am Sunday morning I doubt DH wants to wake up to birdies singing.

Edit: They are very pretty singers! Found out they are available here too.

I can't remember ever seeing one before but some info I found says they are common in pet shops.

Ahh, that would be my favorite thing to wake up to. And with your location, I'm sure you understand how the coloration doesn't hold a candle to my gouldians.

But no one competes with their singing. Although my strawberry finches and european goldfinches are right up there. Just not as prolific in their vocalizations.

They're an african finch and easy to find in the pet trade. Here, a pair at a pet shop runs around $120. If you go to a breeder or a bird show, you can usually find a pair for around $75.

You don't have to have a girl, but he'll do a lot more singing if you keep them in pairs.

Ah yes, Gouldians are beautiful! I'd love some but I'd want a better aviary before I brought some home.

I don't think any sort of finch would like to share the flight aviary with my budgies and for their own safety they need to be in a flight aviary where the cats can't harass them.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the Green Singers, maybe one of the more upmarket pet stores in town would have them, I usually go to the stock feed places as the feed I buy is cheaper there but they only have the very basic birds.

Okay, so update on the duck egg! Thursday I candled and it is still moving inside the egg and when i set it on the counter and watched, It Started Rocking!!!! Just very slightly, but definitely a rockin'!!!

Yesterday When I candled I saw slightly less movement in a darker egg and it rocked even harder than on Thursday!!!!

Today I set the egg out on the counter and it really started rocking!!!! So hard in fact that I had to catch it to keep it from rolling off the counter! It is darker still and it seems to be getting cramped in there, cause it moves less inside the egg that I can see, but when I click to it I can see it moving and feel it against my fingers trying to rock!

That means we're getting closer to hatch time, but no Peeping yet or any sounds of internal pipping.

I know I'm supposed to be in lockdown, but since I don't know the hatch date and I like to know if he's doing okay I felt i was justified in opening the bator and pulling out the egg to candle.

Also a reminder that the Cutest Chick Contest is still open and in serious need of more cuteness!!!
