3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Well I just candled all (ha!) my eggs. I found the stinker several days ago and pitched it. That plus the 12 I tossed tonight (all were clear when opened) leaves me with 40 eggs.

I have serious doubts about another dozen or so... The Aracaunas were too dark to see thru (mostly...) but they seemed to look good! I pitched about 7 off of CJ's eggs

The rest were the swap eggs. That's apparently pretty good for shipped eggs!

It looks like I'm online for 20 -25 babbies come NYD
th.gif
My dad just about poo'd (I live with them while to care for my quadriplegic mother) when I slipped up and mentioned the total.

I am sooo thilled!

Did I mention my eggs getting cooked before? Yes, yes I did didn't I? Well that was tempting fate wasn't it.
Checked my nest box for eggs and found FOUR new broodies wedged into the favorite nest box.
th.gif
Three banties mixes and one small standard mix. While wondering what I was going to do with them I watched the big Silver Sussex girl go and kick all of them out onto the floor and take over the nest, I thought she might be broody yesterday and yup, she is. Now I have 4 on the floor, one in the favorite nestbox. Apparently the other nest boxes aren't good enough for the ladies on the floor.

So, I'm thinking ok, 5 new broodies, where am I going to put all those??? Then I hear angry clucks and squarks coming from behind their coop (there is a 8" or so gap between it and the wall behind) look around there and there is a very unhappy broody there with another nest almost next to her and two more hens walking around behind there.
th.gif
I can't even get behind there to move her or the other eggs. When those eggs hatch I'll have to move the coop, I won't risk it till then.

Plus one of my Dorkings went broody a few days ago in the breeding pen...
Oh, and I still have another two broodies who are hopefully adopting Christmas chicks for me... that I haven't got coops for yet.

Anyone wanna whip me up, oh, a dozen or so broody coops?

Mine finished: I put linoleum on the floors for easy cleaning, and I cut half the top off and used hardware cloth so I can use it as a brooder.

Technically I could go buy the stuff today, I think the store is still open but I think DH just might kill me.

Wow! those are great pics and instructions! Thanks for sharing them with us.

I just logged on to say that all my eggs were duds. Most had blood rings. 4 were clear. I think they were frozen courtesy of USPS. They were shipped and delivered on the coldest days we've had here. Poor things were riding in a 25 degree postal truck all day.

That's 2 bad years in a row. I'll try for a spring hatch with some local eggs. Then give it up!

Barely have time to come in and just hang out and now I'm stick on Kathy's pages. I saw so many last year when we were rating pages I couldn't remember who's these were. Sure hope I never forget again. Awesome Kathy!!!

3. RareBreedFancier's First Chick Hatched After Midnight on New Years Local Time
So, the plan is for most or all of us to put the eggs in at NOON (Local time) on Sunday 11 December 2011. Obviously this is an honor system contest. We are using the atomic clocks for our own LOCAL TIME. When your first chick is completely out of the shell AFTER MIDNIGHT, *12:00:00AM on the 1st of January, 2012 you take a pic of it IN THE BATOR if possible and then you go to your computer and take a pic of the time on the Atomic Clock, posted below, of the time where you are. We are setting at noon our time in each time zones because there will be early hatchers... there always are one or two in a hatch that pop out early. We hope by starting at NOON that gives us a better chance of not having too many hatch on the 31st thus putting them out of the 1st chick hatched for 2012 contest.
Here is the web clock we all need to use to syncronize our computers: http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java - it's close to within 2 seconds AND you will probably have to change the time zone, but it's easy.
Prize: 6 month GFM courtesy of RareBreedFAncier!

4. Guess the Total Number of Chicks Hatched:
For this contest, participants will be guessing the total number of chicks hatched from all the eggs set by the participants (according to the spreadsheet). Your guess must be in the spreadsheet by 12 December 2012. Total number of chicks hatched will be calculated by Laree on 7 January 2012. The person with the closest guess wins! Make sure to update the spreadsheet with your total number of chicks hatched for an accurate count!
Prize: 6 month GFM sponsored by BYC/Nifty!

5. Best Overall Hatch Participant
PM your one vote for the overall best hatch participant to Mahonri by 11:59:59 MST 5 January 2012. He will tally up the votes and announce the winner.

You also MUST post a picture of your set incubator on this thread by 11:59:59 EST Monday 12 December 2012 with the number shown matching what's on the Laree spreadsheet on the 1st post.
