3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Goood morning, hatchers.

We got some snow yesterday, so fears of a Maine brown Christmas are now over. However, you don't have a shovel a brown Christmas. I've got to get out there at some point today and shovel out the chickens. My snowblower broke during the last storm but thankfully this one wasn't a big storm so shoveling it won't be bad.

The person who is getting my excess ducks has had a bunch of excuses for not picking them up including my favorite that ducklings in the same litter should be together at least 2 weeks prior to separating them, so she read. If she doesn't come today as promised, I guess I'll advertise them. I'm starting to really get attached to them. The yellow ones are the most personable, I was told they are probably pekins or harlequin mixes by the woman I got the eggs from. I was only planning on keeping one of those, but I love the way they impishly look at me. Also if I get my face too close to the brooder they get all excited and try to stick their duck beaks through the wire to get at me, and not in a crazy, psychotic way. Oh well, wouldn't be a bad thing if I had 5 ducks, right?

I've got to build a duckling waterer today. They're splashing and drinking their bowl of water so quickly and with the pellet stove going out there the bowl dries out quickly. Last night I was replacing the water every hour until I fell asleep. When I got up this morning it was bone dry.

MERRY CHRISTMAS... from Sasquatch

Love the instructions on the brooder Kathy! Saw some movement in an egg marked 'silkie' with my new stronger flashlight, so I just may need to build one of those!

Going to try to get the Christmas cards out today, WHY can't I stay away from this thread?

Agh! This hatchis cursed! Went in to turn my eggs and the big 'bator with my Christmas chicks is switched off. Looks like one dead pip and not sure about the others. At least one egg is cheaping weakly when I shine the torch on it.
Next check my NYD eggs and the temp is 106 and falling fast when I take the lid off.

this is higher than the last one that killed half my eggs.

I can already see some losses and I expect a bunch more tomorrow for sure.

Time to build broody coops and hope they have better luck than me.

With my new ova scope I can practically see the ribs ossifying!

Is it really that good?

I've wondered about ordering one but they are very pricey over here. I'd like to be able to see in my darker brown eggs better but as my main breed, Dorkings, lay white shelled eggs I've been hesitant to spend the money. Now I'd like to get Marans I'm wondering if I should splash out on the Ova scope?

It's great with light colored eggs, though the dark ones quite that good. I was desperate to dump my flash light because it flickers. Since I spent quite a bit on the flashlight I figured I'd quit messing around. Glad I made the leap, though I think I could do without the scope and go with just the candler base. You don't have to turn off the lights with the scope though, so that's a plus.

Kathy- I love the BeanerBrooder! Mine is similar, but metal, only has one level but can be divided, and has wheels.

Ok- maybe it isn't similar, but my husband is a welder and I am not allowed to have wood stuff.

Overheard in my house just now: "Dinosaurs DON'T fart!!!"

...a six-year-old's conviction is hard to argue with.
