I have 4 Buff Orp. that are 17 weeks old and were all pullets. One of them has a very tall red comb and very red long wattels. The other girls have nothing like this. I don't know hoe to post pictures. There has been no roo behaviors, could this be quicklydeveloping hen? does anyone out there have pictures of 17 week old Buff Orp. hens? thanks V

I'm guessing about 18 weeks in this pic... I will say mine varried alot from one pullet to the next. Look at the pullet behind the roo how mature verses the others.

I just got my first egg at almost 20 wks

Beautiful chickens, thank you, my girl looks like the one behind the roo. I did notice some of my hens have some black in their tail feathers, like a few of them almost look completely black, does this mean they are not true Buff's ? And one of them is very very light blond.

From what I have read it seems that the buff color is complex and it is possible to have some of the blended color to bleed through. My Buff Orpingtons have a light pepper in some of the tail feathers.

If you look close you can see it in the pic below in her tail

my buff orpingtons have black in their tail and ate darker, also there feet are yello, AND mine are over 20 weeks and are WAAAAAy smaller than those chickens

You have beautiful chickens! I have a black australorp pullet and she has a tall red comb and long red wattles. I have 8 girls all together. 5 are 20 weeks old and I'm not sure who is laying yet, I know of at least 1, possibly another. She is one of the 20 week old girls. Not sure why some have taller combs and longer wattles. They must be like people, every one of us is different. Some have bigger noses, longer ear lobes, etc! Weezy, the black aust, is 20 weeks in this pic. Maybe I just haven't seen alot of pics of 20 week old pullets, but she has developed fast and is larger than one of my 1 year old buff orp.

I have 2 buff orp pullets. One matured very quickly compared to the other. I thought for sure I had a rooster. Then at about 19 weeks she did the squat and within a couple days she laid her first egg. The 2nd girl never did get as large a comb or wattle and was about 3-4 weeks behind in laying her first egg. I was surprised how differently they matured. They were pretty friendly as chicks, but once they started laying, they are amazingly sweet! Good luck!

Oh, good. When I first saw that coloring in our buffs, I was afraid it was mildew!
