4 ducklings hatched without eyes?!?

My understanding was that these ducklings were hatched by a broody hen. Are high temps a problem with broodies?

Which most likely means it is not related to a temp spike.

Depends on where you live and where the duck made a nest. I've had some ducks make their nests out in areas that weren't well shaded and I recall finding some eggs with shell temps over 105 degrees, so I think this could apply to broody incubated eggs too.

True, I guess I should have thought about this because it does get entirely too hot in my area and I can see this happening if the duck actually stayed on the eggs all the time down here.

I was about to say this. If the ambient temperature is, say, 106 degrees, there's not much a broody can do to get her eggs back to the right, lower, temperature.

Glad to have some reading materials. We never intend on our eggs to hatch once our females begin laying, but San Antonio gets mighty hot. If a few eggs get sat on and we don't know it, this is stuff I need to know. Our backyard has big, shady trees, but hot is hot, no matter what.
