So what would you do with all that firepower if you didn't want the hostage killed? I would love to see them shoot the other pirates out of the water , but they have a bunch of hostages back in Somalia from previous hijackings. They probably figure in to the equation somewhere.

They probably can't even use snipers because of the motion of the life boat.

The image of America is changing. Has anyone else noticed this. We are too worried about being polictically correct, or hurting someone's feelings, or stepping on someone's toes. First, we are negociating with terrorists, then we are "talking" to Iran about nuclear power, then I hear the president state that we are not a Christian nation, sorry but he does not represent me or any of my family. I'm embarressed to say the least. I think I'll go to one of those "tea parties". I'm an angry American. Now, I'll just

Perhaps it's BO... staying out there on the rough open seas, don't you think they'd have Body Odor?

I think it is BO but not body odor, this is darn embarrassing, and it is not the Navy's fault, but they are the ones to suffer for it and the poor captain.

They will surely kill the Captain once to shore. My prayers and sympathy go out to the captain and his family.

Early Saturday, the pirates holding Phillips in the lifeboat fired a few shots at a small U.S. Navy vessel that had approached, a U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The official said the U.S. sailors did not return fire, the Navy vessel turned away and no one was hurt. He said the vessel had not been attempting a rescue. The pirates are believed armed with pistols and AK-47 assault rifles.

Phillips jumped out of the lifeboat Friday and tried to swim for his freedom but was recaptured when a pirate fired an automatic weapon at or near him, according to U.S. Defense Department officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk about the unfolding operations.
From Associated Press

One rocket while he was out of the boat and it would have been over, does anybody see a resemblance to foreign policy of about 30 years ago. This has to be terrible for the moral of the Navy as well as the captain in a lifeboat watching the most powerful navy in the world do nothing.

It could be that the Navy won't do anything, as they are worried for the Captain, the pirates have him with them in a small boat, would not be viable to open fire on them, they would immdiately shoot him.... the waiting game hopefully will work out...... no doubt they have no food or water in the "hostage" boat....sometimes it's not all about "shoot them out of the water" because of strength and the ability to do it..... it's about playing the waiting game, they will need water soon.....
