4 week chick with wound on back of neck

A bit new to raising chicks (aside from when I was a kid and had no ability to pay attention!). So I'd love some advice on this. Our 4 week old chick has a bare spot on the back of her head/neck area with a wound on it (pic below). One of the other chicks was pecking at it, but I'm not sure whether the other chick caused it or not. I've separated her and have been using Vetericyn Plus daily, but she's also scratching at it occasionally, which isn't helping.

Anything else I should be doing? Is there something you can put on this kinda thing that forms a protective barrier from further irritation like scratching? I'm kind of assuming it just may need time to heal, but happy to do more if needed.

Looks like a pecking wound from another chick. I would put antiseptic ointment like neosporin on her neck and keep using the vetrycin. You are doing a great job! Now to keep her form scratching it, you may want to wrap it loosely with vet wrap. Not too tight or it could irritate the wound, but tight enough that she cant scratch it through the wrap. And if you did see the chick that was pecking her, separated that chick for a couple days to put her in her place. Hope this helps! Avery

Thank you! Appreciate the response. As a bit of an update, she's losing more feathers around her neck, as she keeps itching the area. Something I need to worry about? I don't have any vet wrap yet, so I haven't tried this

Are you using the antibiotic ointment to keep it from drying out? Is the chick separated apsrt from the other chicks with a small partition?

She is separated with from another chick via chicken wire. Otherwise they both kinda freak out. I put some Neosporin on her to keep it moist, but we didn't have any so I just put it on her. No excessive itching with the other chick

Maybe you could try this! They are usually made for parrots plucking her feathers, but I be it would keep him form scratching it!

Do you only have 2 chicks? Blue-Kote will help disguise the wound from the other chick (s). Boredom and cramped quarters lead to picking. A hard habit to break.

Sort of...we have four but due to some loss during a shipment they are a bit different in age so we have them separated (2 and 2). They had a decent size of brooder, but since this started it's cut in half to separate them. I'm can try to put them in a fenced run tomorrow just to give them some more stimulation and space. Does the picking behavior (if due to cramped quarters or boredom) generally go away once they get more room and stimulation?

Also, I haven't tried blu-kote, but I've heard of it...I also was looking at pick-no-more...any thoughts on this stuff?

Generally, yes it does. The more space the better. Still disguise the wound though. Best of luck!
