Hi everyone! I’m hoping some of you expert chicken-keepers can help me out. I hatched a (I think) barred rock chick about four weeks ago. I am not positive about the breed because I got the egg from a friend, and she’s told me she thought it was a barred rock. From the coloring I am hoping it’s a hen, but the comb and wattles are quite pink. This chick was the only one that hatched and my town doesn’t allow me to keep roosters, so your help in identifying gender is very much appreciated! Thanks!

That's what I suspected! He's just so much sassier than any of my girls ever were. Well, the whole point was to break my RIR from being broody, so I guess he's accomplished that task and can move on to a new home. Incidentally, I have a batch of chicks hatching in a few days. If I had to rehome this chick, is there any way to sort of..."replace" him with the 3 others I have hatching? His momma hen is still broody even though he's pretty independent. This is my first time having my girls raise their own chicks, so I'm just curious!

Since he's been out of the shell for 4 weeks, I doubt it very highly. Everything I understand about broody chickens, and mothers, is that they wouldn't wait this long to hatch more chicks, so she wouldn't accept new ones.
