I have twelve 4 week old chicks. I put them to bed very late last night, around 11pm. We were busy and I didn't get around to it until then. They are in a 4' x 4.5' pen in the garage. We just rurn the lights out when it's bedtime. I noticed that one of them (a Buff Orpington) had a bloody spot on her wing. I washed it with some water and separated with from the rest over night. I put some Neosporin on it this morning. I couldn't get a good picture of it and it doesn't look like much this morning. But, I have only had cats and dogs where a little wound doesn't mean much to them. She is back in the pen with them this morning with someone watching them. I am wondering what happened. We are in the process of building their outside coop and run. Yesterday for the first time, we had them all outside for a few hours in what will be their 12 x 12 run. It is not at all predator proof so we stayed outside with them. I haven't noticed any "bad" behavior between any of them. Did they get upset being put back into their small enclosure? Do I have to worry about this one getting pecked at by the others? Could she have done this to herself? They seem "normal" so far today. Thanks for any help!

Are there any sharp wire protrusions in the fencing? Chicks are notorious for finding small openings with sharp hazards and squeezing into them, getting stuck and injuring themselves trying to get out.

I don't see anything that could be the cause of her injury inside of the pen. The other chicks seem to have gotten more interested in her wound, so I have her in a cat carrier outside of the pen, facing into the pen. Is that okay? I don't really have a way to keep her in the pen, but separate/safe from the others.

How long do I need to keep her separated? Until the would looks dried out? Will she be okay in the cat carrier being seen by the other chicks until she can go back in the pen with the others? Should I put her in with the others at night and just separate her during the day? Sorry - so many questions!

The blu-kote spray is nice but it stains something fierce. Sprayed some on a chicken once and she decided to floof right afterwards and speckled my face with blue. So watch your skin and clothes, especially the latter.

I wasn't able to get to the store to buy anything before it closed. I saw a DIY recipe to make your own version of Blu Kote - honey, tea tree oil, and food coloring. I mixed that together and put it on her. The other chicks didn't seem to like it at first. They would peck at her, then wipe their beaks, but then kept pecking at her. So, when it seemed the pecking wouldn't stop, I separated her again. Can I wrap her in something, like that self stick gauze type of wrap? It would keep her wing against her body, but no one would be able to peck the wound.
