4 Week old Cochin w/ huge crop...impacted???

Quote:
Well I wondered about sour crop since it was soft and balloon like, but it has not smell really...even what she threw up did not. I just massaged her crop again and she almost instantly started to throw up. She tries to breathe when its happening and gets it in the hole in her mouth...then she makes these horrid noises and actions and I think she is dying! It scares the crap out of me, so i try really hard not to make her throw up and just to gently massage. She is still active, no where near as active as her sisters, but she moves around. She makes the most pitiful noises down there almost constantly. I would film her and post it, but I don't know how to do film on here. I feel like there is nothing else really to do aside from massaging and waiting for my hubby to come home and have him do the surgery. Can I ask a ridiculous question...is there a way to know for absolute certain that she needs the surgery??? I know she has a huge crop, and something is wrong, it never gets smaller and she is not doing as well as her sisters...so I am pretty sure this is what is wrong, but before I put her through this, is there a way to know for CERTAIN??? Thanks so much! Oh and thanks for the links too I will check them out next!

Hey. Rough go eh. The determining factor for me to do the surgery was when she started to deteriorate. She was fluffed up and eyes droopy and all. Was lookin like a dying chicken. So I decided that I would rather risk it than do nothing. So far I am glad I did. She is bright and all today. Oh... yeah she made her first night. Drinking some kale broth. If your girl was still looking well I would keep with the massaging and treatments otherwise. She may pass it on her own. I had another girl this week with the same thing. She passed hers with some help of fluids and massage and seems to be doing well. Checked her this morning, though she did not want me to... and her crop was flat and just a bit from eating so far this morning. All the best. Keep us updated.

If you have a vet to dispense meds I would ask for Enrofloxin and Metoclopramide 5. This is what my avian vet gave my showgirl cockerel when he came down with sour crop due to stress of shipping. I woud sit and message his crop towards the belly very gently as not to make him throw up for fear of asphyxiation. He did get over it but relapsed a week later but got over it again. He is now very healthy and lovin the ladies. I am sorry I do not know of any other treatment.
Good luck

That is wonderful! I will check on them and see what they do then call around and see if any vets will give me those meds! My little girls is just sitting around today so far, not really being active, but it is early I am bringing her up to hang out with us so I can watch how she is doing. (I have a big chicken room downstairs) My husband comes home Monday so we will see.

This is her this morning, she is just sitting her making her pitiful peeping noise or sleeping. It makes me so sad! I have had lots of chicks and I not exactly new to chickens, but this is new to me and tears me up! Anyways here are the pics of her crop today, with the water holding her feathers out of the way, so you can't see it as well, but you can still see it is huge.

I just wanted to update that she seems a bit better today. My hubby came home and told me (not real happily) that if I got the supplies then he would do the surgery, but I think I will hold off as she seems a bit better and her crop is not quite so huge. I would prefer to avoid it if at all possible.
