I have four silkies and within the last few days I noticed my brown one has been having a seizure. The episode lasts maybe 20-30 seconds (watching it is gut wrenching though and feels more like 5 minutes long). It happens maybe a few times an hour. He is eating and drinking like normal. It's just all of a sudden an episode will come on and he'll like somersault back with his head pushed into his body and shaking his head. Then after it's done he hops up and continues on like nothing has happened. I don't think any of the birds pecked at his head causing him to act like this because surprisingly enough no one is the "runt" of the liter that gets picked on. They have their groups and they stick to it. Is there anything I can do? Is this a sign that he will die or is this a condition he is just going to live with considering it doesn't seem to be changing any other behavior like eating, drinking, or interacting with the other birds.

Thank you so much for your time and advice! I really appreciate it.

when an animal has a seizure, they dont really remember it, or know what happen to them......covering the eyes may bring the bird out of it faster....it has something to do with the brain...i dont know how long a chicken can live having seizures.....good luck

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know what I can give to him/her? I read something about vitamins..is that appropriate for this situation? Since yesterday I would say the seizing has gotten worse. Instead of a few every hour, I just went to the coop this morning and he/she had 3 in 5 minutes.

You can try to give him a couple drops of poly vi sol, without iron, once a day. It really sounds as if he has a neurological issue that was either present at birth or through an injury. If he is seizing that often, maybe the kindest thing you could do was end his suffering...with every seizure there is a risk of more brain damage being done.

You could put electrolytes in his water and give him poly visol. These are two great vitamins. I don't know much about seizures, so I am sorry I cannot be more help to you. I wish you good luck.

Can I give him poly vi sol if their water is currently medicated with Duramycin? I started the Duramycin yesterday. Will those two things clash and overload him? I just went to check on him and sat there for about 10 or 15 minutes and it wasn't till I was about to leave that he had a short one. So it's a little reassuring because if he kept up 3 seizures every 5 minutes, I think it would have been too much for his little body to keep up with.

Poly vi sol will not complicate the Duramycin. It is just baby vitamins. May I ask why you are medicating with antibiotics?

Is electrolytes the same as Duramycin? Sorry, I'm very new to the chicken world and the person we got some chicks from said Duramycin because it can't hurt them. Thank you. I appreciate your help- I had no idea about poly vi sol until you and StandardLover mentioned it. So as long as the Duramycin and poly vi sol wouldn't OD my silkie, I'll be going out right now to get that for him.
