4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Looking for some humidity advice.

This is my first time using my new Brinsea Octogon 20 Advanced with turner (no humidity pump). I'm going to incubate in our finished basement, steady temp of 63° and humidity of 60-63% confirmed with two separate hygrometers. I've had the unit up and running to stabilize and it's holding a nice even temp. The humidity is 26% according the the Brinsea digital display and 19% on my backup Acu-rite humidity/temperature monitor.

Now my question, with a high room humidity should I go with a dry incubation or should I add water?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My first set of NYD eggs arrived today! Waiting on two other orders yet.

I hope everyone is wrapping things up with their incubators and getting eggs together, I here the PO should be blowing up with packages from this hatch yesterday, would be interesting to know how many states sent out eggs yesterday and today. I have babys trying to hatch this morning. It always seems the one you think will pip first, always pips last and the one that pips first hatches last.

Hi again NYDHers )

1.) diy coolerbator update -- ok so the DH didn't get the best theromostat & after I sent him several great links to how to build it (when he decided HE would build it after I said I was going to build one ...?? yah it does require electrical stuff...ok thanks hon...) he apparently decided to just kinda build it however he felt like regardless of practical considerations. <sigh> ok so this time around it will be as in/ where is , the thermostat will keep it from burning the house down, to prevent fried eggs I will be living w/ the remote end of the thermometer on my person and be running to adjust the dimmer switch as the first indication of a temp. swing. I've gotten it to stablize temp. several times in trial runs, I just don't know what will happen when the house heat has to come on later in the month... which leads to :

2.) _snow_ ya'll are talking about it, fine, but pls pls keep it at your place. I don't care for any thank you. Oh and for some reason reading all your posts about it now has me craving homemade sugar cookies w/ colored sugar on top dipped in hot coco, argh...

3.) I GOT HATCHING EGGS -- woohoo! Picked them up today, a 30 plus mile drive each way, some narrow, windy country mtn roads, & a doing his best even stopped to ask directions DH driving & we found the place. Very nice BYC person let me see his lovely flock and had the eggs for me, even noted the egg cartons as to odd vs even days for how he has been tilting them for me. Happy Dance! The BlueCM Roo was very nice looking, all the girls were pretty (several breeds). I held the eggs really carefully on the ride home and they are resting now. Sooo very excited!

Hope all the other looking for eggs or waiting on deliveries have happy good luck today!

That is one darling little chick! It looks like I missed the fun of the hatching, but watching the chick move around is exciting too. Congrats!!!

My NYD eggs from D. Horstman came this afternoon - those are some big honkin' huge eggs, sheesh. lol None of them were broken and only 1 air cell looks wonky, the rest appear to be a-okay. I have more eggs that were supposed to be here yesterday, and not here yesterday or today and the tracking info hasn't updated at all in three days so...it's not looking good for those :(
Just had that happen to no tracking updates for 2 days then they just showed up at my local post office so dont give up yet maybe they will arrive on monday just in time

The post office is overrun with egg shipments (oh, and regular packages too) so they're slow about shipments right now. Seems like everything is taking an extra day, the tracking updates are showing "vanishing" packages for a day or two, then they are updated the day they are delivered.

Delivery Confirmation is just what its name implies....it will confirm delivery...it is not point-to-point tracking. It is not scanned at every single place automatically like Express Mail. The only scans you can be sure of with Delivery Confirmation are the "Accepted" and "Delivered" scans. Many times you will be able to "track" it quite closely but you will usually see "gaps" when a package is in a processing facility. Packages not sent Express are handled as quickly as they can get to them, but even though they are "Priority", that doesn't mean they handle them immediately. There is no guarantee on Priority for time of delivery. You have to pay for Express Mail to get that. DC packages may not be scanned leaving the sort facility but should be scanned at your local office before your carrier takes them out for delivery. If you don't want the eggs brought out to you and would rather pick them up to avoid bumping along or cold temps, call your local Post Office and asked that the package be held. Leave your phone number for them to call you but follow up if you don't hear anything when you expect them. Also, leave a note in your mailbox a day or two BEFORE you expect the eggs with the same info on it.

I hope everyone's eggs arrived safely and on time.

p.s. Yes, I used to work for the Postal Service. No, I won't try to defend some of the horrible service and treatment some of you have had to suffer at their hands. Yes, I believe most of the employees there are good ones that are trying to do a job with fewer and fewer employees and a broken system.

Delivery confirmation is typically pretty reliable for scans, but this time of the year, there's just too much for them to go through. :/ Some places don't scan them at all, but most places seem to scan and you can "track" it this way, but it's definitely not TRACKING.
