4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

We had NO snow last year and it SUCKED!!! I never even took my snowmobiles out of the garage... My daughter got her snowmobile certificate and never got to go for a ride.. You can't really do anything in MN inthe winter if there isn't snow. I couldn't even ride my horses. The ground was too hard and slippery for their feet. With 2' of snow, you can really condition the butt muscles of a barrel horse and have them ready for those early spring runs!! I'm hoping for a HUGE blizzard this weekend!!! Come on snow!

I'm waiting for eggs as well... I hope they come today. It is so cold here right now, I know they'll be frozen if I don't get them until Monday. I will be so bummed...

I made a waterer out of a 5 gallon pail and 4 chicken nipples. The I bought a bucket heater from L&M (our local fleet store) and dropped that right into the bucket. It works great! No more frozen water... I just haul new water out whenever I notice the bucket getting low... It's fantastic!

I have a question for those of you with a homemade bator.Do yall have your fans run all the time or just when the thermostat kicks on?
I have mine wired in with the light to come on when the thermostat kicks on and it goes off with the light. Should i rewire it to stay on all the time?It is a box fan.it looks like a computer fan but way bigger.I tried the computer fans with a 12 volt charger but burnt up 2 so i borrowed the box fan from my BIL. Thanks for taking time to read and anwser my questions.
On another note i think my duck eggs i set for nyd hatch will not make it.My temps are fine during the day but it was down when i got up this morning to 90.

Maybe they will be okay.
Both my incubator and hatcher fans run all the time. I think that keeps any stratification from happening.
My hatcher uses 4 computer fans in a line to draw air across all the eggs and they are currently powered with a 12vdc, 1 amp output charger(don't remember what it used to charge) but I have a couple 120 to 12 power supplies in waiting should the charger fail.

YAY! I found my first blue egg! It's a pullet egg, but I might try it in with the hatch a long anyways. :D
I always hatch my pullet eggs. Last year when my d'Uccles started laying I collected all their eggs and hatched them. It was the best d'Uccle hatch I had. With all kinds of varieties hatching after that I got nothing but Black and Blue Mottled, even though 2 of the girls were Mille's.

I'm trying to hatch all my Lav Am/BR eggs. She is laying very good and hope they are all fertile.
