4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

OH NO!!!!!! My incubator had a serious malfunction!!! The temp sensor stopped working and instead of switching off heat (when it gets to temp) it left the light on and the eggs were sitting in 114 degree temps for nearly 10 minutes!!! I opened up the incubator and tried to cool them all quickly. I then started candling them to see if the little chicks (10 days old) were doing OK. Almost all of them were very still. No movement. I could see the little black dots of the eyes but they were just sitting there. Are they all dead?! Can the chicks survive the temp hike even if it was only for 10 minutes?! I am in tears here and I am so upset!!! I have been so excited for the hatch along and thinking that I am doing really well then THIS!! Anyone have advice or input?

I just called my local post office and they said they are so behind today that they haven't even started to sort the afternoon mail shipment yet... They are only open until 5 and it's 4:25 now, so no hope of getting them tonight...

How frustrating, can you call in the morning and have them held so you can go pick them up?

They can survice a temp spike like that if is for a short amount of time and not all. If it was only 10 minutes, they could very well survive - leave them for awhile and then check them again.

Internal temps take much longer to change than external temps on the eggs. If you caught them quickly & got them cooled they should be fine. Candle again in 3-4 days to make sure but definitely don't give up yet.
