4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I would name her Kahlua or Mudslide.

Mudslide is a cute, and fitting name for a duck, lol.
Any body going or doing a dry hatch?
I dry incubate, but raise humidity for hatching. I also have added some water to keep it 30-40% in the incubator this time though, since with the furnace going humidity in the house is really low.
Good Morning All!

I woke up around 5:00 AM this morning and checked on broody momma, no babies. Then I checked her again at 7:00 AM and I'm pleased to report we have 1 Duckling OUT!!

The adorable little thing is pretty much solid black, and has a smudge of orange on his neck/head. He is still drying off so I cannot be for sure what color it'll be. I took some pictures and will post when I get them off the camera.
Cute, cute, cute!
Thank you, he is the fiestiest little thing you ever saw in your born days! LOL

One duckling has springed forth this A.M...Yeah! We have three or maybe four pips, on the other eggs. So eggcited!

That is an adorable description!

Yeah!! I need to clear out a pen to put them in, huh? = ) Latte is a cute name, too!
I set my Button eggs at 9:12 A.M. this morning.
Shellie, I cannot even begin to tell you how jealous I am!!! I want ALL of those incubators!! *evil smirk*

I already did.

Where are the pictures of the broody duck? I may decide not to post pictures of the duckling if I don't see them S O O N! JK! LOL

I tired doing a dry hatch once, I failed terribly! We have 0% humidity here, so dry hatching does not work for those of us that live out in the middle of nowhere, in a desert! LOL

Congrats on the duckling! Can't wait to see pics.

A REMINDER about Internal Hatching egg temps and viability......

A GREAT READ.... Ignore the title. has wonderful info in the article!!

http://www.brinsea.com/customerservice/poweroff.html

this is just part of it.....

‘what damage is likely to have been done?’
Occasionally the power shutdown can be predicted and the concern is to keep damage to a
minimum.

With the emergency situation in mind as well as the more subtle question about daily cooling
of eggs during incubation, we have attempted to set out some of the more fundamental
research information together with our own experiences and suggestions.

A review by H. Lundy of research carried out by a number of scientists over many years
identified five temperature zones each of which is characterized by its major affect on the
developing embryo. These zones are not clear cut. There is some overlapping and the time for
which the embryo is exposed and the age of the embryo blur the limits.
Lundy’s five incubation Temperature Zones:-

Zone of hatching potential

Zone of disproportionate
development

Zone of suspended
development

Zone of cold injury

CelticOaksFarm - seriously jealous that you could swing by there and they will break up the lot. If I were anywhere near, I would SO be there. :) Congrats on the pickup(s)!

low is better than super hot, remember even momma hen or duck will get off the nest and the eggs will cool some.

Aspen I want them all too, but uuumm yeah we wont go there.

We dry incubate everything here until lockdown and then aim for 70% or higher. the more surface area you have the better for water pans. We use the disposable ziplock plastic pans with a mesh cover to keep new hatches out of the water. ALWAYS adding warm to hot water to bring humidity up.
Oh, but Shellie think of all the hundreds, and hundreds of babies you could hatch out. You'd need a whole new house just to keep brooders in.
