I can't candle tonight... I can't candle tonight... I can't candle tonight.  (Most of my eggs are very dark Marans.)  How do you guys that hatch all the time check them?  I'm planning on just using the sniff test for now. 

i usually don't candle my Marans until day 18 when the air cell will be obvious (or not). I do give them all a whiff.

Then I was relieved to see some eggs decorated for the Decorated egg contest!

Bettacreek had Duck a hen die over night. Not sure why. A later post pointed to vent prolapse...Toss that egg into the bator

MarineCorpFarmr posted that we should all get out to the coop! Good reminder to stop neglecting things to hang out on this thread(did we listen?)

chiqita pointed out that Emus are not for the faint of heart, or those that value their teeth. I have so much dental work that it would not matter to me! Bring on the Emus!

Post 3785 has a contest update. Many start tomorrow, so watch out! There will be a lot of posts...

. Another early egg art post....colupnorth has a Turkey without a rooster that is laying eggs...how do they taste....eat one and let me know please!

cmfarm removed all but 62 out of 99 from the Bator as non starters. Still, 62 is a lot of chicks!

In the Afternoon there were posts about needing self control--The urge to candle is strong! Let me help

Advice for candling Marans was asked for and answered

Miley Cirus look a like, Phyllis Diller look alike!

OMG this is wonderful. I've been without my laptop for almost 2 weeks and my cell and I can't keep up with this thread....plus that whole work thing always seems to be getting in the way. I pulled 2.5 dozen eggs last night for non-development or red ring.......don't worry I still have another 9.5 dozen or so cooking

This is our first time hatching eggs. We candled a few and all of them seem to be developing. I have two questions after reading this thread, could someone explain the sniff test (I'm assuming this is pretty obvious, but had to ask) and if the humidity is right around 50%, should we still kist our eggs?

Are you hatching duck eggs..or chick eggs? I don't do the 50%, haven't for over a year now. Keep my humidity around the 30's for humidity. Until lock down of course. That's me..I have less babies drown at lock down with the humidity around the mid 50's to 60%...this is for chicks.

sniff, if it stinks..take it out! Trust me, you will know that the smell is just wrong!

My humidity is around 30-40% I never mist my eggs, sniff test is the obvious.You pick up the egg, place it close to your nose and use your sense of smell to check for an off odor. It can be sour or bad enough to make your eyes water. You usually can tell if you have a bad one when you open the bator. The sniff test helps you find the offender.

Ancona Duck Egg Candle Day 13 5 still kickin!! SO EXCITING because we can see right in them!!! We have 40 eggs in lockdown, its day 18 and 5 of the Marans are already Rockin and Rollin, weird because the serama, CPL 's are not yet! Anyway... I expect pips any minute!!! YAYYAYYAAA

I find it hard to tell which egg it is that is smelly. It seems like when the bator has an odor the smell just fills my nostrils and they all smell the same to me (not always, if they are REALLY stinky I can usually tell). I find it easyer to candle them to tell which one is bad.
