4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

We did it!! We went out on the horses and cut down a Christmas tree!! This was a first for us. I've always wanted to take he horses out for a late night ride through the woods in the dark, but ever quite found the courage, but tonight, we did it!! I think it's goign to be a new Christmas tradition for us... So much fun!!!

That sounds like a wonderful tradition to start!

I've candled a few and preliminary results indicate we have a lot of unfertilized eggs :( Maran eggs are too dark to candle, but I know we have 1 RIR developing. Looks like none of my Ameraucanas or brahma/orpington crosses are doing much. We'll try again on day 10 and again on day 14 and remove duds. What a bummer.

More bad news ... a cougar was spotted in my next door neighbour's field late this afternoon. Sure hope he/she isn't planning to eat my chickens. No sign of it being around, but now I'm freaked. I also have miniature horses and big horses and cougars are known for attacking pretty much anything. Eeek

That's a worry! We had a mountain lion, aka cougar, killed a goat that lives a few houses away from me. My sheep are penned at night , but I still worry.

Sorry; about your eggs, that is always so disappointing! I pitched a bunch today with blood rings, even my own eggs aren't looking very good.

I don't have high hopes for my first hatch. It might be my fault for candling almost every day...

Of my 10 silkie eggs, 5 have veining, but I only see movement in one egg. Of my 13 mixed eggs, I only see development in 3-4 eggs. (Some are dark colored eggs, but I can see veining in two of the dark ones, blue and Marans.) I think that is just because the veining is by the air cell, so it is easier to see if I put the light by that. There are way more that look clear than don't, and the mixed eggs were not shipped.

I do hope that we get at least a couple chicks out of the deal.

Yay my incubator is holding sn average of 100° a d humidity at 39% yes should get a good hatch this time.

The Silkies are shipped, the other 13 are not. Of course, they are not mine, so maybe the lady's roos are taking a winter break.

If you are seeing veining, don't give up! If they are bad, the veining will pretty much go away..just give it another day..I candle a lot..never made a difference as far as I could tell. Just do it slowly, don't turn fast. If there is veining just starting, turning an egg fast, can sure turn it into a blood ring real quick!
