HATCH UPDATE:

I have 4 Basque and 4 TJ chicks going strong. The one Basque and one TJ egg left in the incubator were dead. The TJ eggs appears to have drowned as it pipped into the membrane and never made it to the aircell. I pulled away lots of shell looking for it's face and when I found it, the chicky was not moving and it was definitely dead. No movement, breathing, peeping, and if you have seen death you know what it looks like. And I do.

The Basque egg was actually underdeveloped. Looks like a 2 week old chick but definitely dead. Did an eggtopsy and little thing was so small but feathered

I don't think there is anything I could have done for either of them. It makes me sad but I am a move on kind of person. So I am glad I learned some things today and I am not discouraged!! I am actually gearing up for the next set of eggs! NYD will be fun when those guys hatch and I have some lav Ameraucanas, BBS Marans, and Russion Orloffs on the way!

A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVRYONE FOR WALKING ME THROUGH THIS!! AND A BIG FAT THANK YOU WITH LOVES AND KISSES FOR SALLY SUNSHINE FOR ALL THE INFO! THAT WAS AN AMAZING HELP!

These are the raised pens we use, each has a 3 sided shelter space and an in floor pool (cement mixing pan). When the ducklings are young we add a ramp for them to get out and can remove it as they get older.

use to use them for call ducks, but they are for ducklings now.

Oh fun!!! Babies are so much fun
**Mrs Fluffy Puffy! The little peepers I have now are EO Basque and the Trader Joe white leghorns.**

I am not sure if the TJ eggs are all white leghorns or if they use a cross. Either way, they came out will little yellow combs folded over and squished down on their heads. Below of a pic of the ones who have fluffed up and there are two more in the incubator that hatched this afternoon.

I had to help one because she appeared to be stuck and was growing weaker. :( But I am glad I made the decision to take her out and help because I don't think she would have continued to try much longer. Now she has finally gotten out of the egg and is resting. I still have two eggs that have not pipped. One is a TJ egg that doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it and the other is a Basque egg that had a bad saddle shaped air cell. I traced the air cell on the Basque egg but I don't hold out much hope for that one as I think it may have either died a late death or perhaps pipped in a very bad spot.

How long should I leave these unhatched guys in there? Day 21 ended yesterday at 5PM. Thoughts? Do they start to smell bad if they did die? THANKS ALL!

25 went into lockdown last night and this morning, set another 46 last night. Candled about 15 assorted eggs set for nyd... not a single bad egg even the silkies :D
I have 48 eggs saved up so far.....By the by does anybody have Button Quail eggs? If so PM me please. I lost my last female and now I have two males...I need some females!!!!
I just realized the incubator was turned off for the past 4 hours. I was cleaning out the largest of my aquariums to move in some new koi and while I was draining it, I turned off all of the power strips to stop the filters. I hadn't realized that my incubator was one of those plugs... Now I'm super nervous to candle tonight later tonight. What do you think their chances are? I can't believe this happened...

NYD Hatch-a-long Digest for 12/22/12
Statistics: Contest5 was the #1 busiest thread, The main thread was #2
Sally Sunshine missed the #1 most posts! Blarneyeggs had ten more for the#1 spot.

Along with more eggs being pulled from the bator, some had incubator emergencies. Some were accidental while others had to do with power outages. Short times of low temps will only delay the hatch!

RavenWood wondered if the eggs being pulled would be good to use. Some said to give them to the chickens, dogs of pigs

Razadia can't find her place on the zoning map. She can't find a map either. They are not going to worry about the new chicken laws. I wouldn't either.

Cochins, YAY always fun to candle and see everything do fine.

Aspen, the brooder house is a mess right now since I piled extra "stuff" in it recently. Will be doing a full clean out NYD weekend though in prep for goslings. Oh and we have quail in the laundry room lol, need to carry them out to the brooder house since they just came home from hatching at our sons school.
