4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well, two days before lock down, I decide to candle this morning. Glad I did. I had two quitters. And they were doing so well. ?? You just never know. At least my little Nankin is still kicking! Hope that little one makes it. Haven't hatched one in a while. The egg looks pretty full. Hope it hatches early. Gets a head start on those big barn yard mixes coming. I will have to cuddle it once in a while if it does come a day early. So Tues. Lock down for me. With 5 eggs...I hope!

Cots are easy! You might keep them if you are downsizing. They sell surprisingly well as a side business, they are not only my #1 selling bird , but my #1 money maker bird. 8 weeks till eggs or other uses ( well, 6-10 they freak out easily so if you buy them and move them, no eggs for 2 weeks or so) And you can use their poo to breed chicken treats and visa versa if you do BSF. ( some people will argue that, but its worked for me) Buttons freaked me out and mine will NOT breed or lay eggs, I am trying to rehome them. They are very popular and hard to find here however, if I could make them work I could sell hundreds. Grr at you buttons.

In fact gabe, do you advertise your button at the places they sell stuff for big avairies? I bet people would love them from you and your son. They are great for keeping parrot cages clean, there are lot of crazy parrot people in your neck of the woods.
I never thought about that I should . They are such cute little buggers. Are you shure you have a boy and a girl ? its hard to tell with some of them I have heard.

I hope your little chick comes out of that wrong pip position! I am freaking out myself over here because of my double yolker. Last time I candled and could see anything they were both facing head down towards the correct end. They were facing each other too and kicked and bouncing up and down but always facing each other. It was like they were looking into a mirror. Wish I would have taken pics! But I just hope they pip at all. If I don't hear anything from them I am sure I will just die!!

Thank you. Now that I see how mine is dealing with it, I can only hope yours pip to the outside. I did have the pip low, so I quickly turned it up in case there was liquid and they'd drown, but no, didn't look like there was a threat, but now I can keep an eye on her better. If you really can see where their faces are, when you feel like they should be doing their inner pip, you could locate their beaks and try to make the tiniest of air holes. BUT you will risk tearing a blood vein. I would guess that if they manage to pip to the outside like mine, then their only problem will be zipping, as they're tight. If they pip, keep an eye on them, that they're still moving, etc.. and give them, if possible, 16 hours from that point. Then you can try removing a little bit of shell and see if you can cut just the tiniest bit of membrane. If it bleeds (and give it time for it to do so) then stop for a couple of more hours. You have to find the right balance of helping but not until they've absorbed all their blood and yolk. Good luck! That lady on youtube did it, maybe you can too!!!
Lots of activity on the hatch cam I guess the buttons wanted to hatch in the wee hours of the night.

My son just handed me our little female button and she looks like she has some sort of prolapse

I have no idea how you fix that in a tiny little button .
Is it in the belly button? Then it's just the yolk still. Also, someone had a weird situation with watery bulbous sack at the rear end, it healed after a few days, so maybe just make sure it's not being picked on and give it time. It might just go away!
My baby buttons from a couple of years ago. Then when they were almost grown.

Well, they aren't almost grown here, but...

here they are almost grown..Interesting birds. Tiny eggs!!
Scary to hatch.
Oh my! so cute! What do you do with Quail?

Okay hatchers contest number 9 is CLOSED...... I am setting up a thread to vote, I will post the link when I'm done.

cluck, these were from a couple of years ago. I really thought that I would keep them, indoors. Not all of them, I was only going to keep a couple of them. But, they are so skittish, not a friendly bird..of course, they are quail. I like canary's. Here's a couple of pictures of the cage I made up for them. After selling the quail, I put my canary in it. :) Nice and big for him.

It is a nice cage..found it on the net somewhere, can't remember where now!

Hi all. Just thought id say I've learned so much from this thread and cant wait to join in on the next one. I ve been lurking here but I m also on backyard herds. Thanks for all the great info.

You will love hatching chicks!

I put my 7 eggs in lockdown yesterday. I am pretty sure that only a couple will hatch. Started with 48 eggs so not a good hatch. All but 1 egg was shipped and that 1 egg did not develop.
