4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Ugh. I'm 650 posts behind.
PM me with your choice for best hatch participant. Let's say by 23:59 CST Jan 2. That is unless somebody has said differently.
I can announce my first 3 chicks now:
Icelandic
Bantam Marans
Olive Egger
None of my shipped eggs have done anything yet.
That sucks about the shipped eggs. Mutts were the first to start out of my set. need to go set another batch now that i think about it lol

I haven't been able to keep up with all these posts.LOL.I tried for awhile yesterday and last night but just couldn't keep up with who had what hatching and when.I signed up just to be "hatching along" with everyone else, not even trying to win anything. It is so exciting to read about all the babies being hatched.I don't know when the final count for all that hatched will be.I wanted to add what I have so far.I have 21 chicks hatched out and dry.I have 2 chicks pipped right now.And I have 2 turkeys pipped now and 1 that is pipped internally. So far I haven't lost any that pipped.I do have 8 chicks and 1 turkey that appear to be quitters.I'll leave those for now and give them a extra day or two.I am charging my camera now and will add pictures later on this evening.I got some of my blues I wanted so bad plus maybe a blue splash or two.And I got several blacks and a couple chocolates.I had 51 chicks and 3 turkey poults,1 week to 3 weeks old, before these hatched.Plus I have 25 chicks that are 5 weeks old.Lets see......thats 127 chicks under 6 weeks old plus the 3 turkey poults.Wow,this chicken math is kinda getting out of hand around here.I have made myself stop saving eggs to hatch and will try not to hatch anything for at least one month.LOL.Wonder how that will go?I still have 9 turkey eggs that are growing that should hatch in about 2 weeks.I am wondering if I haven't aready got this hatching addiction thingy.Oh well,I have room for them and I do love them so much.
I'll try to get pictures up soon of my NYDH babies.Congrats to all!!!!!!!!!!

Here's hoping your temps were running a little low and those chicks hatch out for your company. With all the good vibes they'll be bringing, I can see it happen!! Oh, and none of my LF have pipped, rocked, nothing yet. But I'm hopeful!!

Guess I need to find out about worst hatch rate contest too. Out of 28 eggs only 3 ended up in lockdown and still not a single bit of activity!
I think I'm going to go cry

So sorry to hear. I may be in the same boat. No activity here but I'm gonna give em some more time. I think my temps were running a little low.
Anyone have experience with low temps/late hatches? When should I give up and candle to check them for probs? I don't want to do anything yet just in case we're still good here.

no chicks yet, but I set late on the 11th, so

for some action tonite!!
well my guests have come & gone, food was good, chatt was nice, we checked on the eggs often

and still zero activity -- no movement, no peeps, nothing at all 5:30pmEastern, just hoping they are behind rather than dead,
but I don't have a good feeling on this one folks : (

I do hope the others still waiting get some hatching soon, it will cheer me up to find out there are others just getting their first peeps & pips...

Quote: Happy Henhouse, I am experiencing the same problem. Despite the issues with holding the temp I miraculously had all embryo's alive going into lockdown. I have blankets around it and its next to my bed.I am hopeful they are still alive. I am honestly having to watch the thermocoupler reading non--stop as I never know what is is going to do. I believe I was a bit over zealous and played too much with the dial thing at first and would try to adjust it every time the light went off or came on to try to get it to stay at 95.5 but honestly it starts to lost its heat it seems every time I go to bed. The crazy thing is I live in Southern California. I think it is cold but is is probably 50 degrees outside. Homes here are not insulated well if at all so opening any door creates a draft or temp flux. This is one of the reasons I put it in my bedroom. I have the heater vent in my room closed off because otherwise it flows a lot of air from the vent. I am holding at the correct temp right now so I am crossing my fingers and will wait and see if I can manage to hold it and hopefully chicks will eventually hatch. Good Luck!

Do you think that these little serama chicks will be ok with the button chicks , the buttons are so tiny but they will be 2 days older and serama arnt full size chicks or even normal sized banty chicks there not much bigger then the cot chicks I dont think??

400

1 more out, 1 with its butt still stuck in the bottom of the egg!

Right after I took that picture, the chick fell upside down between the sponge and the basket. I watched him struggle for a few minutes. It couldn't right itself... I had to rescue her! I wet a paper towel with hot water and threw it in there and helped her as quickly as I could... I hope I didn't cause any problems...
