4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Im not sure this is the right place to post this but...I cant find the thread to the first chick hatched of the new year. I think its contest number 23....

Can Someone Please Help!!

I need help --

I have 2 that are now PEEPing from inside the eggshell (set on time, temp & humidity issues, looks like most of the 22 are dead via candling)

1 Peeped a 4 times last night, 2 are peeping now.

I candled the peepers & I don't see much up in the air cell, when they peep or move it is like a slight rounded bulbish pulsing into the airsack,
that means they are shrink wrapped tight -- RIGHT?

I went ahead and made a tiny hole/pip in egg B, in the airsack end near the buldge I DID NOT BREAK THE MEMBRAIN -- can it get outside air now?
1) Should I break the membrain where I piped for it - I moistened it, it was very dry!

2) I see NO veins in the air sack area, should I make a big enough hole to actually view the chick to see if it really is srink wrapped?

These are now 36 hours LATE , I have only 2 peepers & 1 w/ poss movement that I can see so I need to do whatever it takes to save these 2,
ADVICE **PLEASE**

If it were me, as long as there is no veining, I would break the membrane where the chick's beak is. Good Luck, I'll be routing for you.

I have to offer an apology on behalf of my new chick to everyone who was watching him on my webcam after his pip yesterday. I waited and waited on him all day to start zipping, but had to give up at midnight and shut things down.

Then while I was brushing my teeth and getting ready for bed, my husband calls to me: "Honey, did you know the egg is almost done zipping?"

Frakkin' what?! Zipping in like, 10 minutes? What kind of mutant chickens does Whole Foods sell eggs from? When I looked at him, he wasn't even zipping correctly either. It looked like he got halfway around the egg, then just went "To heck with this, raaaaaaaaaaaaawr Godzilla time!", and just shattered the entire top half of the egg while I was watching.

No worries though, he has received a stern lecture on how to properly hatch. He won't do it again, I promise.

Though it does seem that I do have to worry about other strange mutant behavior. Overnight he randomly divided, and we woke up to two chickens in the bator. Nevermind the empty shell, it's entirely his fault, I know it.

I think you need to start a thread for these so I can keep up on them.

I was at our Whole Foods and found eggs there that said free range. None said fertile. How did you find out that they were fertile? Did you have them hold them for you on delivery?

He must be a Kun Fu Chicken! You should name him Caine!

Wow,I finally got caught up on most of the latest posts.Whew.I just love seeing all the pictures of these baby birds.Congrats to all that got babies. And sooo sorry to read about the ones that didn't make it.I think it happens to all of us that try and hatch, sometimes we have great success and sometimes huge failures.I'm a try, try, try again person so I just keep hoping for the best and go again.I ended up with 24 out of 39 chickens set hatching and 3 out of 5 turkeys.I didn't keep count of how many of my blues and mixed I set so its hard to tell whats what.I did get a nice variety of colors and thats what I always enjoy. Here's a few pictures I took a little while ago.

What a bunch of cute peepers! Congratulations!

Oh well can't hold it in! I've got 17+ chickies! 4 courtinix quail, 11 + Copper marans, 1+ brown leghorns, ( frizzle?) polish over barred Rock, and a mallard!

Went back to the bator to find 5 more pips!!! Haven't had a pip in well over 12 hours, now 5 within 1/2 hour! And 2 of them are in my up -to-this-point quiet Mystery swap eggs!!! Yay!!!
Welcome to Round 2 people!!

My brooder so far... See my little glued chick in the corner?
Mr.Heinz, the yellow striped chick came from an egg you said was from your layer pen (no code)... What is it?? She (I hope) is beautiful!!!
Dawww!!!
When I went to bed last night I had 2 BCM that had hatched...this morning there are 5 (I think). It's really hard to see in there. My early christmas present was a new brinsea cabinet incubator and when you put the lids on the hatching trays - its really hard to see!!!!

I still wasn't expecting anything at all until later today since they were set on the 12th at 8PM - so here's to hoping I still have a great hatch!!!

My sentiments exactly. It's so nice to have like-minded folks to run to and share with!
You glued your chick in the corner?

I would let it dry off and see if it improves ... their beaks are always growing so it may change.
Yay - how adorable! Hope you are feeling a little better. My slowpoke finally hatched this morning after having pipped early yesterday afternoon. Once it started to zip it was quick, but you could tell it was tired.

Great Pictures!

SO I investigated a bit further... turns out I was right on my instinct that the bator's humidity was too low.... the first little pip ended up shrink-wrapped. :( I'm working on slowly assisting since it's still chirping, but it had pipped 24 hours ago. :/

So not what you want to see..... :/
Looks like he's starting to shrink wrap :(

If they are indeed shrink wrapped, and it looks like there is no veins anywhere then I'd go ahead and try and break them out. If you see ANY blood STOP and don't mess with the egg for 30-60 minutes, then try again. This method has worked for me. I recently helped out a shrink wrapped duckling, he'd absorbed his yolk sac and everything, so I was able just to pull him right out. Good luck and keep us posted!

i was feeding chickens today and obviously i was in Olivia's way (bantam hatched in sep.), so she decided to fly up and land on my head, then go over to the other side. does she realize there was plenty of space for even my Jersey Giant to go through?!?

my experience is that many times if they are late and shrinkwrapped they're already too weak. I also discovered there's 2 membranes, the dry outer one...and the very thin, very delicate inner membrane that has the blood vessels. You won't be able to see the inner membrane unless you gently remove the dry outer membrane. But if you peel it back you risk tearing the inner membrane. I personally won't just let them die. IF you know they're that weak or they're dying in the shells after you hear them peeping then i'd help. BUT it almost never turns out good for me. I also have many many hatch way later than 36 hours. I wouldn't go on time, you may just have late hatchers from too low temps. And Im pretty sure they dont peep unless they've internally pipped. Maybe you can water test them? I'm not that experienced but those have been my experience.

Well, my Double Yolker didnt hatch :( I opened it, only one chick inside with 2 yolks stuck together. I think it may have died because it couldnt absorb both yolks, I guess the other wasnt fertile or didnt have a blastoderm on it. It was fully formed though.

Othe than that, I had 24 chicks hatch, I cant remember it thats with or without the 4 pekin ducks. I do still have 3 paint/sizzle eggs from EMRickey in, they where still moving, but didnt look as developed as the others saturday when I candled them.
