4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Matt,

Thank you for the excitement and the miracle of hatching!!!

It's why I enjoy hatch a longs! We all get to share in the experience!

I am so thankful I chose the Hatch-Along for my first attempt at incubating chicks. I have had a wonderful time...It was so nice knowing there were new friends waiting to share both the good and the not so great times throughout the whole adventure! It is a wonderful blessing and another wonderful miracle and I am so happy to have known this experience.
My sentiments exactly. It's so nice to have like-minded folks to run to and share with!

My brooder so far... See my little glued chick in the corner?
Mr.Heinz, the yellow striped chick came from an egg you said was from your layer pen (no code)... What is it?? She (I hope) is beautiful!!!
You glued your chick in the corner?

The newest little one hatching has an unusual beak. The bottom is longer than the top by a mm or two... Will it get better or worse as the chick grows? If it does get worse, is it still compatible with life??
I would let it dry off and see if it improves ... their beaks are always growing so it may change.
So regardless of being sick and miserable.... I have been up about every two hours to check the bator... Sometime between 5:30 and 7:40, Chick number two hatched! This is the one that pipped right as I was wanting to go to bed... so glad I didn't wait for it. :D Interestingly enough, my first pip hasn't hatched yet...

Yay - how adorable! Hope you are feeling a little better. My slowpoke finally hatched this morning after having pipped early yesterday afternoon. Once it started to zip it was quick, but you could tell it was tired.

I have to offer an apology on behalf of my new chick to everyone who was watching him on my webcam after his pip yesterday. I waited and waited on him all day to start zipping, but had to give up at midnight and shut things down.

Then while I was brushing my teeth and getting ready for bed, my husband calls to me: "Honey, did you know the egg is almost done zipping?"

Frakkin' what?! Zipping in like, 10 minutes? What kind of mutant chickens does Whole Foods sell eggs from? When I looked at him, he wasn't even zipping correctly either. It looked like he got halfway around the egg, then just went "To heck with this, raaaaaaaaaaaaawr Godzilla time!", and just shattered the entire top half of the egg while I was watching.

No worries though, he has received a stern lecture on how to properly hatch. He won't do it again, I promise.

Though it does seem that I do have to worry about other strange mutant behavior. Overnight he randomly divided, and we woke up to two chickens in the bator. Nevermind the empty shell, it's entirely his fault, I know it.

Could you guys please take a look at this link? My only chick is having problems and I'd do anything for the little guy.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/733439/possible-mushy-chick-disease-and-leg-ingury-in-chick

I've had chicks that would do the paddle walk for quite a while. Some just aren't as coordinated. As long as the legs aren't spreading out sideways, she is probably ok. Is the mushy tummy going down? Putting her in a cup sounds like a good though if she is having trouble staying right side up. Soo hope this little one comes around for you. Vitamins, or electrolytes. Work great. :)

SO I investigated a bit further... turns out I was right on my instinct that the bator's humidity was too low.... the first little pip ended up shrink-wrapped. :( I'm working on slowly assisting since it's still chirping, but it had pipped 24 hours ago. :/

So not what you want to see..... :/

Well, I've got my first little one in the bator... It falls asleep like, ever thirty seconds or so...but it took a drink of water, so I'm content (I dipped my finger in the water dish, and it watched, and then I put my finger to it's beak, and she swallowed it down, I did that three or four time until she stuck her own beak in. :D) ... the bator seems quiet... I'm pregnant and have the flu, so I"m off to bed. :)
That's cute, I love to watch them drop asleep, it's too funny!
SO CUTE!!! Love that feeder, mine is too big for the chicks, and it's only the larger round one. They're so pretty, those chicks!
JUST kIdding... I looked into the bator.. and was checking the temp because the humidity is making it run LOW... .and BOOM, I have a new pip! xD

My last sarama baby just hatched . So I am 5/5 for the ones that made it to lock down for serama 9/9 for button quail that I put in total and 1/2 of the cots that made it to lock down. All and all I was pleased with my little brinsea mini eco. 5/5 for lock down serama eggs and in the 24 hour window that is avrage 9/9 for the buttons in the 24 hour period as well and well the single little cot

It was so much fun watching your live cam! Especially with mine hiding in the nesquick box, LOL I had cuties to watch!
OOH I forgot to say I told my boyfriend about the sale on the ecoglow brooder or whatever its called from brinsea and even though the code didnt work for him he still bought it for me , he spoiles me so much. So in the next 7-10 days I will have a nice heat source instead of the dang metal things and hot red bulbsl

I finished a few mods on one of my brooders, prepping for the move. With the inverter in my truck the brooder in the bed, I'll be able to keep the heat on for them for the whole ride :)
Move? I missed something, are you all moving?
Wow,I finally got caught up on most of the latest posts.Whew.I just love seeing all the pictures of these baby birds.Congrats to all that got babies. And sooo sorry to read about the ones that didn't make it.I think it happens to all of us that try and hatch, sometimes we have great success and sometimes huge failures.I'm a try, try, try again person so I just keep hoping for the best and go again.I ended up with 24 out of 39 chickens set hatching and 3 out of 5 turkeys.I didn't keep count of how many of my blues and mixed I set so its hard to tell whats what.I did get a nice variety of colors and thats what I always enjoy. Here's a few pictures I took a little while ago.

So Sweet, and all the colors! What adorable little munchkins! Congratulations

I kept waiting for a link on the contest page. Not sure why there wasn't a link for contest #23 so I'm hoping this is where I'm supposed to post this. I had to go to a friend's house for a New Years eve party, so I had my son set up a camera over my incubator and also connect a team viewer connection so I could watch them hatch through my friend's computer. This chick (bottom left) hatched out at 12:03am so I took pictures of the computer screen, using my cell phone.

I tried to get both (chick and clock) in the screen. The chick is in the bottom left side.

I just read that a nurse uses her stethoscope to listen for their chicks chirping in the bator and if she needs to pull and candle!! NOW WHY didn't I think of this???? I would look so much better with a stethoscope than my ear shoved against that bator, yet alone being a tad more comfortable!! LOL

gave up on trying to catch up again. Looks like so much excitement. Many awesome exciting hatches. A few not so good ones and good luck on those that are having difficult hatches. Because I have definitely been there!!! I just found I typed the wrong number for my guess of how many. It was supposed to be 2800 or something but I typed 1800. So stop being amazing hatchers! LOL
