4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

There are crazies in all groups, I think PETA's main misson of people not killing or abuseing animals is a good one but some people take it way to far. That being said , unless they have changed the rules its not a good idea to talk about that peticular group on here as it just stirs up nasty comments and usually gets a post locked or what not , We shouls carry on talking about other things.

Dear Hatchers and Non Hatchers,

I just wanted to THANK all of you for making the 4th Annual NYD a success. As you probably know, this was the first time any of my team or I led a hatch and then to lead one of this size was overwhelming.

I found as we were getting closer to the hatch date, it was more difficult to remain caught up. There was frustration felt by some of you that my team and I were not answering questions posted in the thread. It had been requested numerous time to PM with questions but I fear those requests were also lost in the thread.

My team had everything set up and ready to roll on Dec 10. At this time, there were requests from higher ups to change stuff. This caused a ton of stress for my team. There were many times that some of us were ready to throw in the towel.

Each of us on my team have had personal issues pop up. As a result, it became more difficult to devote the time needed to the 4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long. Reading criticism of our running of the hatch added to our personal burdens. I value constructive criticism, especially when solutions/offers to help are given.

I truly value all of you and am glad that you all participated. Please bear with us as we wrap up the contests. At that time I will have made my final decision as to if I will host another hatch or not. After the events of Dec 10, I told higher ups that I would not host another, but decisions can be changed. I do know some of my team will not be continuing for another hatch. I will make my decision soon enough to be able to give somebody else plenty of time to get things organized.

Thank you all for making this a great SUCCESS!

Jim, I couldn't even keep up with READING the thread, let alone running contests & multiple threads. You & your team have done a great job with an overwhelming project.

You guys Rocked it all....what an amazing job!

Just responding to the marans question..no, I won't have a marans agian. They were always mean to my other chickens. And, I had tried three different times. They are the boss, at least in my flock. It is a small flock, may make a difference?
Ok, I have to log in here on Marans.. HOWEVER my girls have a fair bit of free range and hiding space so everyone can run from bullies when they are small. YMMV.

Mine are very friendly and while they did take over head chicken, they dont peck or bite or freak out at things. they come when called and only fight being picked up when they are being put to bed from the top of the coop. ( except for the girls I got from ron! they dont like me picking them up, I think they still just pine for him, lol) I have 3 different breeding lines, all semi local. The chicks don't seem more agressive to me, but they DO start running around faster then other chicks, so I leave my sleepy babies in the incubator and take the rambuctious ones out. I do seperate bantams and larger chicks after I lost some beautiful silkies to something last hatch over my birthday. ( OK they are not seperated now, but I only have 5 chicks and only 1 is a pure marans)

I think a lot of the local people breed for pleasure and I think their Marans lines show this by being friendly, broody and calm. They may not win shows all over the country ( they might of if poor louie had not died I'm still bummed) but they have good shape, nice eggs and very nice backyard friends.

What I have noticed is Marans hatch more roos then hems, however. And the eggs are not the easiest to hatch on FCBM's.
GUESS who is getting an Emu?!?
make sure to do your research, have room, and socalize the heck out of those chicks. they get REALLY REALLY big and fast.
Wow! what cutie! he does look like a penguin.
8)
Yes, yes he does!

This is my little one with the beak issue... It is perfectly straight, just longer in the bottom... She seems to be eating fine, no issues at all, just looks like a little bulldog!
keep an eye on it, if it is straight and does not curve, you can trim some beak, but I know nothign about it. I know angle can change as they grow however.
How did the person who won the hatchalong win? Just curious, cause after i signed up i heard nothing.
Which contest? I can tell you about some, not all of them.
Is there a page where you can go see who the winners are of the contests? If I recall on my last hatch a long, there was a page..sorry if it has already been mentioned, and I missed it!!
This seems like it should be simple, but is not. However, all the contest that have winners so far ( polling takes longer people are slow to vote and hatch is sill well, hatching) the winners should have been contacted. I don't have a list of the winners, its scattered around so i cant just post it. Chalk that up as a learning curve thing, heh. I see a lot of little open dbas in my future if we do the next hatch.

I so hope I can donate some prizes!!! COME ON CHICKENS and Breeder PENS!!! Easter may be too soon though

Lord Knows I have the time!! Well I do now anyway LOL
I'm not sure how that will play out, but since I get the least mail of anyone, pm me and I will let you know what happens.

I will be going over all the constest again tomorrow when i have time off and see what still needs to be done, will tell ya all more later.

Jim, You took on a monumental task that no one except those who have "gone before" can truly appreciate! As a teacher, you know that some lessons have to be learned in the school of hard knocks...and you have graduated with high honors!!

Jim, I think you guys did a fantastic job! This was the first time y'all hosted one of the hatch-a-longs and problems were bound to come up and I think everything was handled very well. Y'all did a great job and I know I had a lot of fun.
