4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Thats COOL!! my adult boys like to get a few cheap bags of cotton balls and dip them in water and stick on friends cars and cover them! its pretty cool for winter weddings!

I lived in Shreveport for 11 years. Y'all do NOT handle freezing well, especially since it doesn't snow; it ices. I remember 6 inches of ice on the roads one year. It wasn't any fun at all.
I'll keep the snow over ice any day! Hated the ice storms when we lived in Kansas City!

Yeah I remember those days! In good ol South Dakota, there are no trees unless a human planted em, so there is constant wind. Those ski masks that everyone everywhere else wears to rob gas stations? Yeah we wore them so we didn't lose feeling in our faces while waiting for the bus. -50 to -60 windchill wasn't uncommon in deep winter. I never showered in the mornings because I didn't want my hair to freeze either. And you have never lived until you get a blizzard every week that dumps one to two feet of snow like clockwork.

Boy, I'll never miss that place! Lol. I hated measuring snowfall in feet, and I love the fact that everything closes down over two inches of snow up here in high desert country. I bet I couldn't even keep chickens there *gasp* the horror!
-50 to -60 degree windchills alway find their way here in January/February. We have a few more trees in Northern Minnesota, so the temp is really cold to get to that low of windchill. Nope, no showering in the morning .

Yes, you could keep chickens there

Just a bigger pain and some chickens do not do well in this climate. You should have seen our Sumatras freaking out over the snow and the other hens just looking at them saying "What is your problem, girl?" as they continue scratching through the snow for some tidbit.

I also live in Minnesota and our chickens never go out in the winter, they hate the snow. Our coops are a bunch of those dog kennel panels set up around the barn to make a 6ft by 28 ft area, we let the chickens out every so often when our dogs are locked up, but in the winter, they'll simply go up to the edge where cement meets snow and just stare at it for hours, they wouldn't dare step in the stuff so me and my sister went out and each grabbed a chicken and put them into the snow a couple of feet from the barn, they freaked! They acted like they were walking on hot coals! They are all cochins so they are winter hardy and have tons of feathers covering their feet, but walking it snow just ins't going to happen. I'm tempted to try making a pair of booties for their feet to see if that would make a difference, hahaha.

My daughter did make some chicken booties last year for a science fair project. Lets just say that they need some refining to work.

aoxa, i agree sometimes so confusing have to convert american terms into canadian ones or vice versa.

Last night got down to -8 C here sooo like 18 degrees fahrenheit.I was worried that all our water's were going to freeze but luckily everything was running fine, must be the chickens body heat in the barn helping to keep the temp up.I know in the horse barn it has to get darn cold before the water freezes because the horse's body heat keeps the barn toasty..well above freezing!

Random question, but since we are talking about colder temperatures, can chickens drink/eat snow?

They will eat it. Mine loved eating snow.
