My birds are never cooped up during the winter, they still free range in the snow, as long as it isn't windy, they roam. I have very hardy birds and love being out even the bantam that is out there likes it.It's snowing here now too! I'm happy about that for a few reasons. #1 It makes the winter white, bright and cheery #2 It insulates the ground and keeps the ground from freezing down too hard - which keeps my septic pipes from freezing. I can tell you that frozen septic pipes can make for a miserable winter. Taking a shower in a bucket is not fun! #3 It gives us something to do in the winter, like snowmobiling, skiing (downhill and cross-country), snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating, etc... #4 If it is snowing it is probably not too cold. The colder the temps, the less humidity the air can hold.
*It is going to be cold here no matter what - so I will still have to crack ice out of water buckets for the animals (don't have electricity to all the coops), drag water from inside the house, collect eggs more often so they don't freeze and the chickens will have to be "cooped" up more than usual when it is really cold. The chickens get used to the cold and snow and just add fluff.
We are supposed to be getting 5-9 inches of the white stuff tonight. We will see if we need to take the plow out in the morning.![]()
That happened to a customer of mine the other day. Except they scanned it and said the attempted to deliver even if they didn't so I couldn't get my money back. Did they send it priority? You two can get your money back, if it was to be delivered by the 6th. Have the person you got them from check into it. If it isn't priority then you won't get your money back.Well, my 2nd batch of eggs went through the Kansas City sort facility yesterday so they better be here today. The tracking information says they should have been here on the 6th so...no idea what shape they'll be in. It's going to be 16 degrees above zero (16 below freezing) tomorrow, so depending on where they are during that time, I have an idea they'll be frozen eggs if they don't get here until Monday. Arriving today would be perfect.I have my little faces drawn on the first shipment that arrived here.
I had no idea that polish chickens laid such whoppers of eggs - those things are humongous. So are the Silver Penciled Rocks - and a very pretty shade of brown...but humongous. My husband said "are you sure those are for hatching and not for eating? those ones look really good." (brat)
...wow. The "Expected Delivery By" date just switched over to December 8th instead of the 6th where it had been sitting for the last 4 days. Yes, she sent the eggs priority. It's pretty sneaky to change the expected by date like that on the USPS site, but ah well. In all honesty I just hope they are not broken or jostled too much. I can handle them being here today, because the weather has been cold (not freezing), but all that handling is what worries me (concerned about air cells being non-existent).That happened to a customer of mine the other day. Yes, but your average low temperatures in Dec and Jan are higher than our average highs. My birds are never cooped up during the winter, they still free range in the snow, as long as it isn't windy, they roam. I have very hardy birds and love being out even the bantam that is out there likes it.
