I use little mesh baskets or old repurposed strawberry containers (might try making custom baskets with some of that plastic craft mesh somebody mentioned) I fold up a paper towel to fit the bottom and then cut a piece of burlap to fit. As long as there are several eggs on it, there aren't any issues with the whole lot sliding around under chickie's feet. If there's only one or two in there, I'll use a little scotch tape to hold the paper towel still so that there is no slipping.
Well, it's confirmed. Red has got to go. Nine infertile out of 15. Only six of my eggs are developing and the temp wasn't the culprit. I am extremely unhappy with Red and chances are he's going to be dog food. No one is going to take a mean roo that doesn't do his job. Unless someone has another idea as to what is going on with him. I've had fantastic hatch rates in the past with him as the covering roo.
This time of the year can be a bad time for fertility in roosters that are just coming out of a molt. Did Red molt this fall? You might give him another chance in the spring if he did. Of course, if he is mean, you may not want to......
...all the "soil" I've seen in Florida is sandy and not dirt that turns to mud with a single drop of water like here....maybe that helps....they are beautiful!!
Oh my goodness, I'm so excited you guys.... I got a rabbit hutch today, a solid wood on three sides, with a door on half of it. ^.^ I'm going to use it and turn it into my coop.

Lots of us in the top 10 most posts
Today is day 7, so there are 14 days to go. Lots of eggs are being inspected for development and signs of problems. The Sniff Test is one of those tests
Coffee clears the sinuses, How do you smell thousands lots of eggs without them getting too cold? What are we smelling for? Lots of good stuff was posted about this.
Then there is the tap test! A ting is good but a dull sound is bad. Some can tell by weight. If they are lighter, they are developing. tazcat70 warned us to not remove eggs unless they are obviously clears or bad--it is sad to crack open an egg and find a living(then dead) chick in there
Sally Sunshine shard a video of a Duck embryo dancing in the shell! (3828)
TMNfarm went for a horse ride to get a Christmas Tree! Pictures taken had light streaks in them. Possibly the presence of relatives that have passed on?
SleepyOwl is concerned about the hatch. Take a breath, it will be ok, you will have a good hatch. and it will be amazing. Also, you will be back for the Easter hatch-a long!
How to Cull a deformed chick--not a common occurrence--Don't worry about that!
Brookhavens posted(3880) some great information for concerns at this time of hatching, including culling chicks.
Aspen is back! What a great multi-quote!
Post 3881 has the daily update for Day 7 Development. CelticOaksFarm answered the Duck Incubation questions for those that wanted to know(Post 3890 & 3941)
Cynthia12 posted pictures of snow at her place in Utah. The system is moving ON now and will be hitting other places next. Love the Dog!
Pele tripped again and eggs fell into the Bator!
coldupnorth posted a picture of an BO with a Santa hat and reminded us that it is 7 days until Christmas. mrheinz77 posted the contest update for chiqita(late this morning) See Post 3926. Post 3967 announced a random post contest. Please post on the contest link, not on the main thread!
John Farmer has LF Mottled Cochins! They were a present from his wife!(later we found out that they were from himself but is allowing his wife to have credit). Razadia says Red has to go! Mean roosters that don't cover hens well are meant for Dog Food! TMNfarm has a mean rooster that attacked the DD. It is going off to be a Guard Chicken!
Warning: Post 3940 has a serious chicken math problem associated with it! Do not go to that post unless you are very strong willed when it comes to chickens.
Sally Sunshine posted a diagram of an egg along with an explanation of things that can go wrong with shipped eggs(Post 3962)
Countrypunk92 had a temp spike, but all the eggs seem fine!
His incubator is made out of a food dehydrator(Invention Contest?)
MarineCorpFarmr has been playing in the mud(again!) with is not black anymore truck!
and his IT guys are working on a member map for us!
PayPal is really messing up Bettacreeks day!
.
Many of us think we need another bator!, however we also know we have spent too much on this stuff already, and hope our spouses will fall let us get one as a present. That way the spouse can take credit for the present! That is Christmas Magic
CelticOaksFarm posted pictures of Sebastopol geese.
I was never a fan of geese either. I liked the Canada geese, but heard "horror" stories about them (flying away and silly stuff). The sebastopol was just too stunning for me to pass up though, lol. I'm still trying to get more from swaps so I can get a decent chance of getting a pair here. I have three eggs coming though, so hopefully all three will develop, hatch and give me a trio (gander and two geese). Oh, if my luck would run that way!
I needed that daily, ronott1! Unfortunately, you got my interest and now I still have to go back and see what everyone wrote, ROFL. I'm so busy right now!

Honestly, I don't remember. I'd have to look through that crazy WYGS to see who I had claimed them from, lol. I figure I have until spring to figure it out!
