4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

OUT of 5 Ancona Duck eggs set Dec 4th.... 4 are pipping away nicely and one pipped the small end and I took her out when I seen it, and freed her sweet beak. BUT I figured I could open the bator since the others are pipping soundly..... But I think she got too much fluid and her beak area is sticky gooey. I am not giving up hope yet, but I sure dont think she is gonna make it poor thing.... her beak looks all yellow and cute too!

I had 5, YES 5 thermometers and calibrated that incubator..... All my eggs hatch 2 days early....

THOUGHTS on the FAN??? I think maybe its the fan that makes them hatch too soon, IS THIS POSSIBLE?? The computer fan really blows that air in there.
I just CANT figure it out.. But I shouldnt complain, I have all 5 duckies, well at least I do for now... poor weeee ducky

mine are pipping early too apparently. I thought I had the temp pretty right-on, but they are Seramas, and they're known to pip early... I dunno

Thanks for the info, such a simple design, and safe around the pets, etc... I really like it, though drowning may not be the nicest way to go, if ya got a problem with them there mice, and you want to keep your pets and livestock safe, that looks like the way to go! Great idea! Thanks again!

I spent the afternoon working on my brooder! Still have work to do, but I repaired the tongue/groove parts, replaced the bottom and added a back, then built a base for it. Tomorrow we'll work on the wire inserts for the doors, the upper vent and the top. It'll need a good paint job and we'll build a tin pan for the bottom that can be removed for cleaning. What do you think so far?

After adding the new bottom and back (it's upside down)

Building the base and legs - the cabinet matches the cabinetry in the mudroom too!

Base finished and attached

Doesn't look that much different yet, but it's sturdier!

Please ignore my ugly floor ... this is the mudroom where all my dogs come in and out of and they have destroyed the lino ... we are in the process of renovating and have walls to move before we replace the flooring!

Harmony's Serama hatched on day 18-19 too!

Thanks. It had to because there is a heat vent underneath that needs to heat that end of the house! Aside from that, it looks more like 'furniture' with legs! I did decide that I'd be using the guinea pig cage for the first few days so that buys me a bit more time to finish the brooder. I love projects!

Ah looking through all the posts and reading about blunders and mishaps with a few of us with out bators and lockdowns and such. I am sorry to hear about all the troubles, and to add to the list myself personally, I had to leave the house today for a bit and was gone nearly 4 hours only to return home and find my locked down bator running at 104 degrees

Eggs are no longer rocking but I am going to remain hopeful that it is simply due to the fact that their all positioned inside their little shells and are resting up for the big hatch.

Good luck guys I hope things will run a bit smoother for everyone now that were nearly a half day into lockdown. Gratz to all of you with the early peepers too!

Oh no! It does take a while for the eggs to warm up that much though, maybe they're ok. I haven't seen my eggs rock yet (though it coulda happened while I wasn't looking?) Really hope they're all ok!
