4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

update 7:31 pm E. set 23, locked down 22 of which at least 2 had movement at lockdown

21 maran over maran, & orp & Ameraucana
1 muttxmutt

Zero activity of any type (no sounds or movements)

humidity impossible to maintain (I've opened it 2x since lockdown to boost it from below 30% w/ all sorts of extra water, container of water, & wet washcloth ) rigth now it is 45% = (

I'm not sure anything is alive in there, last night's wet washcloth looks bone dry now!! If they are alive I can't see how they will hatch w/o shrink wrap issues -- should I open it AGAIN and add more water, a fresh wet cloth?? candle an egg? or just keep waiting?

I would open long enough to get a bit more water in there.
Remember, in the most controlled environment, the organism does what it darn well wants too.
And the Hen does not lay on the egg constantly, so temperature and humidity are varied.

Is it a homemade unit? Maybe the fan moves too much air, causing the quick dry out conditions.
You do not want to close it too tight, but maybe you could slow the fan speed, or turn it off for a while every so often. Just thoughts... Good Luck!

UGH commercials

LOL, I still have it going on my desktop but when I went outside to play with my chickens, I took my tablet and had to watch the commercials, LOL
Well I am skipping over 900 posts and just wanted to post that the silver pencil rocks I had that went into lock down have all died. One looks like it died about the time the went into lockdown, one was upside down in the shell and died without pipping, and the third is the real puzzler. It is in perfect position, beak lined up right under the air cell, it just never pipped into the aircell. membrane was nice and moist, everything looked good, the chick was just dead.

I am sorry not to hang out, but it so depressing seeing everyone's chicks. I am going to go play with some of my older chicks.
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry! That really is a bummer

Lost a peeper. Seems to have accidently ruptured it's yolk sac and died.
Ugh, I'm sorry! It's awful when they're so close and yet don't make it

I have had a great hatch with my Reptipro 6000! I put 38 into the hatcher and the last one is out, but not sure it will make it. It pipped at the small end, bled a bit and finally kicked out with a huge glob of yolk still unabsorbed. Even so I'm very happy with 38 hatching out of 40 set! My best hatch ever!
That's really awesome! Congratulations!
How are you really sapose to fit 10 full sized chickens in here I mean really look how full it looks with just 4 tiny babies
??
Chicken eggs that is
Oh, the Brinsea? I thought it was 7?

Hey, why is the mini advanced suddenly 3X the cost that it used to be?

Pele, the lemon yellow one currently in view on the webcam is great, all fluffy already, any idea why type s/he is?

No idea actually, that's part of the fun! I got these eggs from an organic grocery store (they're not supposed to be hatching eggs). I suspect that the hatchery uses either Production Reds or some sort of Sex Links. As soon as these lil babies start feathering out, I'll be able to tell more about their ancestry. They are commercial, so they're probably officially called Line X3345 or something :p

Hello folks, I have a question. What is the best shavings or pellets to use for new chicks ? (For the floor)My brother uses aspen. I have used pine. I have always heard not cedar because of the aromatics are bad for the respiratory system in chickens? What do you guys use? Thanks mrs
