I opened up my egg. I had a feeling it was dead. I was right.

The others died earlier, so they didn't look like chicks yet. This one was fully formed, but maybe a bit small. So, I was right to put it into lockdown, (dark egg, so I wasn't 100% sure, but thoguht I still saw veins, and the egg was dark.) I am guessing it probably died right around the time I put it into lock down. I was frustrated when the rest died, but this guy made it so close... I am so sad.

It would have been dark with a light belly.

Where do I post my hatch count for the best or worst or what not for hatches ? small maybe cuae I started with 8 eggs?

Are you sure you lost them? I've had the power go out longer than that around hatch time and I had quite a few survivers. They just hatched a bit late.

I've only got 1 chick so far, out of 27 set.

I wasn't expecting a great hatch, since most of them were japanese bantam eggs which have a lethal gene. Plus they were shipped. But 1? And it has extra toes.

I still have a few eggs left in there, but I'm not too hopeful for them. I recently added a fan, and this is my second hatch with it. I only had 1 of 10 hatch the last hatch, and my hatches are normally way better. I think I'm setting more, and trying without the fan.

These are from my girls who have finally started to lay again, so hopefully I'll have a brooder full of cuties too soon.

When they are done hatching, where are we supposed to enter our total hatched at?

Here's my only chick so far. I do have hope for one other egg, but the rest are dead.

For those of you who saw my thread, he's doing a lot better. He is a lot less 'mushy' now and he can stand with support. He's not walking yet, but I have been given some ideas of how to get there.

Here's the problem with his legs, they stay in front of him like this and he flings them up and down which gets him no-where.

Just checked after a road trip and we have a bunch more eggs with signs of hatching!

Ahhh.... such cute chick pics!! I want to post some of my own so badly!! I set about 10pm on the 11th and had my first pip this morning... I can see it breathing in there, the hole is good-sized and it is chirping occasionally... I see a few of the others rolling a bit, so I hope I get more pips soon!!

I had 13 go to lockdown, out of 48, so I really hope I get more than one chick...

for me please!!

This is my first time incubating, always used a broody before, but I know that my temps were good and humidity also didn't have huge swings... but I had mostly shipped eggs, with a few of my own, many of my own were infertile from the pen with young cockerels... And we got a good cold spell the weekend before the 11th, so the shipped eggs could have been scrambled and chilled.... Really hoping for better luck next time....

So, I took this week off of work, partially as a staycation and partially to be on hand for the hatch. And I'm starting to realize that I suck at this whole 'staycation' business.

I'm roughly six and a half hours in, and I've cleaned the house, done repairs to the coop, hung a wall of our wedding pictures, emptied and scrubbed down the fridge, done laundry, vaccuumed, and packed away Christmas items.

It's becoming very very clear that I have no idea how to go about this 'relaxation' stuff. lol

Maybe after you have everthing squared away, you'll be able to RELAX!!!!!!!

Yes! this is what I was talking about. Believe it or not..this little one will get stronger. Those legs look nice standing together, like I said, some will do the paddle walk. That's what I call it. They paddle along. It usually takes up to three of four days before they will get the hang of standing..up. lol..funny to watch now that I know they end up being fine. That's a cute chickie.

Try hobbling his legs and place him in a coffee mug. I have one doing something similar and the treatment seems to be working.

Still the same. He's starting to figure it out with help, but his legs are still forward. I'm going to go ahead and try the coffee cup and see if that helps.

UPDATE -- 7pm E

Note ALL apparent wetness of inner membranes is the result of me touching water to it in order to moisten & to see better.

I took the egg shell down to just above the air cell line so I could get a better look at what was going on it there!
I think they still need more time to absorb, I'm still seeing a fair amt of red veins in the membrane *when I wet it* -- ?? What do ya'll think?

Note they have NOT spun or moved relative to the shell AT ALL in the 5 hrs since I did the external pip,
I did use the twessers to make sure no bits of eggshell might fall into their mouths, and to widen the area so their nostrals are finally out of the membrane w/o rupturing any membrane just eased if apart ever so gently to give the beaks some movement.

Here is B - who bled a tiny drop at 2pm when I accidently took a piece that went below the aircell line -- i think now at 7pm it still needs more time?
note the whitness of the inner membrane just to the left of the beak , it was ALL like that again until I rewet (this w/ bator at 78% and wet towel over them all day)

So given they still don't look "done yet" to me, I'm more & more thinking the internal pips (even though 24 hrs later than hatch time) were purely a result of the bator falling, and they never would have internal piped those dry membranes, but if they could have it would have not even have happened when it did, but later, as in they are both running late AND too dry. But that is just based on comparing to other pictures I've seen here -- this is all new to me...
