Bad news / Good news

Bad news - Egg E died
Was very odd b/c I had switched out the hot wet paper towel tents 20 mins earlier and thought all 3 were still acting robust, good strong peeps when I moved them.
Then 20 min. later I heard that high pitched distress peep chicks make, reached in to move the paper towel a little so I could view E, saw an exhail & beak drooped but I just thought sleeping,
I picked it up to see and realized there was no in breath, it had simply died right then. I pulled the shell off - ALL the yolk was absorbed, no sign of it at all, & looked like basically all the vein blood also. Now here is the odd thing I've never heard about - when I flipped the dead chick out of the shell, a tiny drop of GREEN "poop" exited its butt, does green mean infection? it did not smell at all.

Egg B is pushing out of the little bit of shell & membrane & towel tent - it is pretty weak, no were near able to stand.

Egg W is still breathing, but not even trying to exit ...

GOOD NEWS - Egg L (a dark maran x maran) made a faint peep - this egg was 4 inches from the egg that was 103.4 degrees right b/f the bator falling incident.
& I'm doing nothing but watching to see if it will pip externally on its own sometime in the next 24-36...

I'm sorry you lost some of your babies! *hugs* I'm routing for you!

So sorry you lost egg E. I really hope the others are strong enough to pull through. Still waiting for my eggs to do anything. So far...nothing. If they don't peep I should just leave em to bake more? It's so hard waiting. I keep wondering if there's something I should do.

BTW which egg is the love child from your story? I can't remember and to lazy to search this thread.

I have read every post, through the hatch, I think I've read most of the literature, and yet I have had the most bizarre thing happen today!
We had an egg partially zipped, it had been several hours, and all the mayhem around it, it was still peeping and moving inside the shell.

A couple of chicks jumped up on the partially zipped egg and it CRACKED IN HALF!!! The chick didn't get up, and the shell was still partially attached.
They were running over it, pecking at it, and eventually it cleared the shell, and started moving.

I noticed that it seemed to have a "thin bag of water" attached to it. Later as it tried to move around, I realized it was fluid under it's skin and the skin appeared to be sagging and there were no feathers on that part of the skin. It was like a water balloon, boy the skin is thin! It has been hours, and this poor little thing is still struggling to move, rests more than anything. also that leg is outstretched, the other is curled underneath it's body.

We removed all the chicks to give it a chance. Later, another chick hatched, it has been recovering so it has not bothered the injured chick.

Has anyone ever encountered this? seen this, heard of this? I am not holding out much hope...but tomorrow may bring a miracle.

babsbag, double check your thermostat by putting in a medical thermometer wrapped in a waterbag to simulate the egg, or else just a candie thermometer, I noticed they work really well too, just laying in there. Anyway, digital ones can go off, and even if you can't recalibrate it, you can always adjust it.

I have a regular old thermometer mounted in my incubator and a digital one, they both say 100.

My incubator is an old Lyon Turn-x that I got for 10.00 off of CL; one of my better finds. I have to turn the eggs manually, but other than that the humidity and temp are steady, quick, and easy. I am just not sure that my humidity levels have been good, not the fault of the incubator, but mine. It even has a wet bulb reading I can do. I have read so much about dry hatch and no dry hatch that I don't know which to follow.

I got 4 silkies, but I had hoped for more from 18 eggs.

I have 6 hatched out of 54. This was mostly due to hateful post office handling and a few rookie mistakes during lock down. I ended up shrink wrapping some of them on accident. I was able to save one because I thought I should check on him. He externally pipped and stayed that way for over 12 hours. I am glad I checked, but once I did, and I saw the shrink wrap, I knew I had to check the others that did not pip. One after another I tapped and then opened them up to find dead chicks. Once was still alive, but I think in my frantic effort to find his beak, he took a few good breaths and ended up drowning. I feel awful about this but I knew no matter what I did, it would have happened anyway since that one had pipped in the wrong end.

So I have my precious few but they are there. I will have to think of better ways to avoid shrink wrapping in the future. As for my double yolker, they did not make it. There is NO WAY to tell at all when you should help. I waited too long as I did not want to make any mistakes. But that is OK. I got a lot of great data from the microcontroller device I have been developing so that will come in handy. I should have heeded the late night warning that my humidity was getting a bit low.

My little Nankin egg has been pipped all day, I was just saying to my husband, I haven't heard it chirp yet..and then it did. Boy, what a tiny little sound. Maybe it has, but I haven't heard it. Very tiny little voice. Glad I heard it, now I know it's just hanging out for a while. Oooh, maybe tonight.

Got four pips now lots of chirping. But the one with the pip pn the side isn't moving or anything.

Just let it be. I've done a lot of helping and I've learned my lessons! You could probably help but you may end up losing it anyway. Or it may hatch on its own. Or it may not hatch but if you mess with it, you could definitely lose it... not saying you will but you COULD. It seems to be more heartbreaking, to me anyway, when I lose the ones I tried so hard to save.

Green poop is normal. It's what they pass after they hatch. He probably couldn't pass it, being stuck in the egg, and it hurt him trying. That's probably what the shrill cry was. This wasn't the little black and gold one was it? Was that one yours or someone elses?.

Loosing E just surprised me, b/c they all seamed equally strong etc. just 20 mins prior, & then finding it had absorbed the yolk etc & should have been good to go just made it more confusing, we all decide it looked "not done yet" at 7:30, at 9 it was going strong breathing & a few good peeps, at 9:20 dead - if there had been a big yolk or a broken vein I'd have understood, it just seams random ...?! Of course it could have had an internal injury from the fall, really I assumed it killed them all so why at this point would I be surprised by anything.

Egg W is the Love-child egg from the story, still alive 25 min ago, the one not even trying to get out of the half shell/ wet towel tent.(which maybe is good, save up strength awhile longer). But it did open its eye for the first time when I changed it's wet towel about 90 mins ago, so we can hope

Also, I hope I'm not over-posting, I'm sure not everyone cares about each little event in my bator, but I'm hoping that giving details might help others in some way, esp. if they are having anything similar, which I wouldn't wish on anyone, but stuff happens.

Meanwhile no action on L , but just that I heard it peep for the first time around 8 pm Eastern is, all things considered, rather fantastic!
