Yes, I'm looking for something. Was hoping a local shop could make me a nice custom fit tin pan, but they are all idiots there and apparently can't even check their email until Monday so I'll look elsewhere. The issue is that the space is an odd size so it's proving difficult to find something that will work.Ravenwood, I also thought I would love that cabinet for my Seramas! You need to get some sort of pan at the bottom for easy cleaning. maybe a cut down tote?
Is it a Maran?I know I said I had posted my last picture, but this last baby that hatched, well, when my DH said it looked like a Penguin, I had to agree..Happy Feet!
Look at those feet..looks like boy feet.![]()
My RIR's go into lock down tomorrow. 6 made it to lock down out of 10, had a quitter
tonight to throw out since last time I candled.
How big are Emus? I keep thinking they are huge and picturing Elf from the Christmas movie. LOLGUESS who is getting an Emu?!?
My recollection from years ago is that Ameraucanas are feisty. In my brooder, one chick will grab another chicks foot and go running backwards with it dragging the chick and then all the rest dive in. Nasty lil peckers!Ah, Chick B, the very aggressive one who basically killed W is Maran over Ameraucana !
so perhaps that cross is more, aggressive in general, at least more so than other chicks I've encountered. Chick K is pure Maran, and equally sized but even so I had to separate them for about the first 8 hrs to keep B from also killing K while K was drying and learning to walk. I never expected to need to do that, I know sometimes they hurt each other accidental, but B was really being very deliberate and persistent to a degree I was shocked about and again, I've delt w/ half wild hog piglets so I know it isn't always sweetness & light in nature and this chick B was intense. I'm hoping the upside is being a very healthy robust chicken who will free-range well![]()
& btw B is also the one of the 3 I had to assist, the one who started w/ a hernia & I let drag the half eggshell he was still connected to w/ red veins for 6 full hrs. As of yesterday you can't even tell there was ever a hernia , maybe mean, but also robust...found the food figured out the water and has been jumping on things and trying to fly around way more than any other 24 hr old chicks I've ever seen.
I have 8 Maran eggs still in the bator, will float test tomorrow.
& Call Me Crazy, but I have 8 Duck eggs (plus a few chicken eggs a nice person gave me ) which got picked up today. We are going to modify the coolerbator tomorrow then TRY AGAIN
I figured if I set the duck eggs tomorrow they (might) hatch for ground hogs day. Yep, I am not gonna give up!
All my NYD Chicks, and Ducklings are sold or reserved so it's time to start another hatch!we are hatching weekly now through June 1![]()
Ya know...I bet there are at least a few BYC peeps in your area that'd be more than happy to get ya some eggs to hatch.... ; )The bator is all cleaned out and ready to go again!! But I don't have a roo anymore, so no fertile eggs for me for a while...
OMGoodness....Shellie what adorable babies! What breed are all your lil chickies?
Jealous.....yep duck, chicks and goslings too. Sent two goslings off to new homes today
Sounds like you're gonna be in business!!Well, since I have an Ameraucana roo and just hatched 2 more Ameraucana X roos and a whole bunch of Maran chicks I think I can probably manage that next year!
Good job! Does it have crooked toes too, or is that just the pic?
Looks exactly like my Ameraucana chicks did years ago and like two of my Ameraucana Xs do now!
That is just bizarre.
You've had a really rough go of itAs for Marans - I would agree that because of the difficulty in seeing into the egg, it is probably not the best choice for beginners - that would extend to any breed with coloured eggs though IMO. So far my Maran chicks are quite docile compared to my Ameraucana cross chicks ... but that may change as they age. I did a bit of sniffing the internet too and found a lot of folks saying that Marans hatch late or that they had shrinkwrap issues ... now this could be due to incubation issues, but if all things are equal and all other breeds hatch on time without issue it seems odd that the Marans hatch late.![]()
Well - that's the plan, but I'm beginning to wonder myself as I don't think it's enough room. I have no space out in the barn for them and I'm in n. BC ... it's winter here until the end of April, but if the temps are mild I may be able to put them out earlier.
What an adorable Penquin!!I know I said I had posted my last picture, but this last baby that hatched, well, when my DH said it looked like a Penguin, I had to agree..Happy Feet!
Look at those feet..looks like boy feet.![]()

Jealousy over here...droolingGUESS who is getting an Emu?!?
What a good mommy Prim is!
I could always drive the hour to your place and give you some of mineThe bator is all cleaned out and ready to go again!! But I don't have a roo anymore, so no fertile eggs for me for a while...
Oh Razadia, I am so sorry that the last hope didn't make it.Well, even though I tried not to give up hope it really did quit. I think the rough shipping along with having the bator in a bad spot did them in. Maybe someday I'll get to try again with seramas.
I wish I could give you mine I just hatched lol I put them up on a local list for 2 dollers a piece I didnt really care about the money I just didnt want to put them up for free and have someone want them just spur of the moment and maybe not give them a good home lol and a lady wants all 5 but so that would be 10 lol not bad for 5 little serama and she wants to know if 8 is ok, its not about the money so thats fine I just thought it was kinda silly gettting a great deal but wanted to get that great deal for even less.
. Mini is still sitting on her 4 origanal eggs and one she snuck at some point that the other hen laid and I have 8 old eggs Im doing a box and lamp experment with . I wish you had better luck these guys are soo adoarable and ubber cute as chicks.![]()

They were shy I guess . Grats on the babies , what kind of eggs are you hatching and how many?I don't know what in the world is going on..I was feeling really lousy last night...I had pretty much given up on the remaining eggs and was pleased to have the 2nd egg hatch 24 hours after the first. I went to bed and thought I would wake and they would both be dry. To my surprise tonight I opened the closet and peered into the incubator..It is full of chicks and the remaining eggs are zipping right now as I type this note!!!
So a word of advice to the late hatcher...Don't fret...don't obsess...toss the incubator in the closet and don't even worry about it....Once stopped staring at the darn thing the eggs decided to hatch!!!
