Some. Hatchery chicks are not bread towards SOP, they just have parents who are that variety and they hatch all the eggs. A Breeder usually is trying to go towards the SOP, and may also be looking for personality , hardiness, size, etc.

You can get great chicks from a hatchery if the parents happened to be great. You can get fugly ones as well, since they are not working at any goals but chicks .

Some breeds it is more noticeable then others. Some breeds are imposssible to find as hatchery chicks. Some breeders are less vigilant about the stock they keep as well. Every situation is different.
Thank you! Thats good to know.

congrats guys! I loved all of the entries. This one was so fun to follow.
Winner of the egg art contest was entry 13, artist cochins!
Good job and well deserved. There are some amazing artists that entered.
HUGE, with many of the breeds used in production, you can't even tell it's the same breed of chicken. The hatcheries will "infuse" the line with something else to increase egg production. I'd rather get a few less eggs, less broodiness and get a bird that looks the way I expect it to.

It might cost you an extra few dollars to acquire exhibition type birds, but feeding them and housing them, the cost is the same. I don't want to put the money and time into a bird and have it look nothing like the bird I saw and thought "Ooooh, I want them!"

ETA - even if I have no plan to show (which I do), I still want my birds to be what I enjoy watching at home. I have quite a few breeds that are non-recognized and will probably never be shown while I'm still around, but I want them to be good representatives of their breeds because I enjoy looking at them and they were what I wanted.

OH WOW...I had no idea the difference!
Not to offend anyone, but if that is how you want it done, you can host a contest. I have, and offered the prize too, and I decided the rules everyone played by. You have a choice to play or not. Either way someone is going to be upset with the outcome, and so as the host of the contest, who is putting a lot of work into it, I think they have the right to choose how to best handle it.
Agreed, if someone is putting the time, effort and money into hosting a contest then they should be able to run it they way they see fit!

Here are my HRIR's that hatched yesterday. All 6 that went into lock down from the 10 that I started with. Not too bad. Someone wanted to see pictures.

I've got staged batches running, with a new batch going into lockdown every 5 days. LOL Just put 19 into lockdown, your eggs are in the next wave.

Come on, SPs!

May have to hit you up this year for some SP "Rockawa Blues". ;) Looking forward to seeing how they mature for you.

I figured crossing in the Sp Rocks would be worth a try as a side line to improve the SP Iowa Blues. So far I've discovered the Iowa Blues stamp their looks pretty strongly on everything they are crossed with. I'll still keep a pure line going though too. We'll see

At least they are SQ SP Rocks!

Love the nice examples of Show/Heritage vs Hatchery birds. I'm a believer. I have a small group of 3 year old birds left from my first group of chicks I bought from a breeder. Some were from her SQ Cochins, Americaunas and Welsummers and the others were offspring of her hatchery stock; Buff orps, Barred Rocks, and black stars. For what ever reason every one of my Cochins, Wellies and AM hens are still with me and laying well and the others are starting to die off for no apparent reaason. I lost ALL the barred rocks the first summer in a heat wave.

awww one of my very first chicken loves was RIR love them there so cute and grow up so pretty.

Ok everyone I think I think I have a problem , I have a nice small mini eco to help keep my addiction to hatching in check but some how I ended up with , a broody with 5 eggs , a bucket and lamp with 8 eggs, the mini eco with 8 eggs and the lg I promiesed myself I would never use again with 12 rock island store bought eggs, 4 bob white quail eggs , 3 serama eggs, and 15 I think cortunix quail eggs.
I have hatching starting from about Jan 19/20 and going every few days till about jan 28/29 th.

Oh yeah, I agree. Think the rocks can be used to bring back some size, improve the penciling, and add a little hybrid vigor to the line. The barred rock should add what we are wanting to strengthen in the IBs, namely returning them to a larger bird of dual purpose and helping to set/strengthen the pattern.

Can't wait to see what you get in the F1.

I'm back from major computer problems! What did I miss? I had to completely re-format my mom's computer and it refused to work. It's a good thing I know how to do it or we would have been computerless!

I love the chickens that come from local Poultry Breeders! They are much nicer and usually better looking. Some even look like The Standard for their breed.

Some claim that most SQ or Hatchery chickens are crossed with leghorns to help with feather sexing. IF that is true, then the leghorn in the Hatchery Stock changes the way they look and their size sometimes.

I still like the hatchery chickens too though. Yes I love chickens!
