5 year old male quail

I to think that the bath is the fountain of youth. Lol. He has had a bath occasionally ever since he was a onto old. They love it during the hot months and it washes away alot of dried skin and old feathers. They all have beautiful plummage. I have learned along the way about them. It's hard because I don't have anyone near that has quail or knowledge. What other pets do you have?

Yes I do believe you have the fountain of quail youth going on over there! Can Simon join in? :D

I also keep chickens and the love of my life Lollie the Maltese dog. LOL He is a big mommas boy and sitting right next to me now. I used to keep parrots here in the house, they have all passed on from old age and I used to keep goats too. Gosh, what a riot they are! Ha!

And you?....what other critters do you keep? :)

I think Simon has his own fountain of youth! Lol. I have a 4 month old kitten and he 5 quails. I also have an adult cat that I feed. He's a stray. There us also as rooster that comes comes from my neighbors house. He enjoys hanging out at my house and eating the snacks I give him. At one time in my life I had goats, chickens, turkey, geese, guineas, sheep, and cows. My experience with goats wasn't the best. They get into everything and mine had had an issue with worms and I wasn't able to treat alot of them properly before they succumbed to it.

Aww...a kitten! I kept cats many decades ago but when I started keeping parrots, well I guessed it wouldn't be a good idea to keep the two together. LOL But it sounds like you are caring for all the strays! Even the rooster! You are such a kind person.

I feed the local wildlife, well, mostly wild birds and the Ravens. What they don't clean up the deer eat.

I have always loved birds of all kinds since I was a kid. Birds run through my veins. Ha!

Wow, you also kept some livestock! I grew up around horses and cattle. I loved those days as a kid. Haven't ridden horses in years.

Goats can have their health issues. They get parasites easily, at least I had troubles too. They DO cause a lot of damage to things and that was the reason I finally stopped keeping them. But I did enjoy their attitudes and fun natures! They were a lot of work. Poultry are more my speed now.

Yes a kitten. His name is Salem. It is scary knowing he lives with me and I have the birds but I keep them away from each other. When I had goats it was always something. They would either be out or in the storage shed or in a neigh or yard. They always were always wormy no matter how much they were dewormed. I also had a bunch of issues wwith the mother goats. They would give birth and not take care of the baby or the baby would have trouble nursing. Birds are my favorite animal to keep. Quail are so easy to me. All the strays and hungry animals seem to come to my house. I hate seeing a hungry animal so I keep extra cat food and bread on hand to give to the stray cat and rooster. How long did your parrots live? Were they easy to keep?

Some cats are good around birds, others can't be trusted. I can remember my mother keeping parrots and we had cats too. Never had an issue. Depends on the cats I suppose.

I am done with the "big livestock". LOL I am getting too

to clean up after them and care for them properly. LOL Birds are so easy to keep and deal with. Something about birds that keeps me engrossed in them. I don't know if it's their freedom of flight, being able to leave the bounds of gravity and fly free or just their bird like ways, maybe it's the feathers? LOL I don't know but they have always captured my heart. ALL species of birds are special to me.

Parrots are very sensitive creatures and highly intelligent. And if treated as one of the family, the do thrive well. I enjoyed them greatly as they are very interactive with humans. I kept Lovebirds and Cockatiels. Cockatiels can be quite cranky and crotchety. LOL But the Lovebirds were absolutely adorable to keep! Very fun little birds to keep around the house. Of course none of them were ever cage bound unless I wasn't home or was asleep. Much of the time they spent on their play areas, on my shoulder or on swings near windows chattering away. The lovebirds live an average of 12 years and the Cockatiels live about 20 years average. I didn't want to keep a bird that might outlive myself. LOL Parrots do not rehome very easily, as sensitive as they are.

What part of the country do you live in? (are you in the US?) We have a winter storm headed our way tonight and as dry as we have been this season, I do hope we get some snow aside from the freezing temps they are predicting.

I wouldn't exactly say my kitte is good with birds..lol but he is getting used to them. I keep them apart but he does like to watch them and is intrigued by them. After my quail pass I want to get a parrot or love bird or something like that. I want a fish right now but my kkitten is to mischievous. I reside in Alabama and it feels like spring outside. It a was a high of 70 today.where are you located?

Sounds like your kitten sure is curious! They sure are at that age. But a good time to acclimate them to new pets.

Budgies make wonderful first timer parrot keepers. They are super smart, can learn to talk, love human interaction and tend to be very docile with humans. Their average lifespan is somewhere in the early teens. Wonderful bird to keep! Great singers too. Cockatiels can be cranky, Lovebirds need to be kept in pairs, but Budgies can be kept as single birds. So I would go with a Budgie! I prefer to get my birds from breeders at a very young age and you can search your area for local breeders. Pet shop birds tend to have issues, (Health and mental) and when you start with a young bird, not only do you bond better with it, but it is easily trained and more trusting of you.

Ahh...Alabama....the land of warm winters! LOL I am up in the mountains of New Mexico at 7,000 feet. It is freezing out there this morning, windy, overcast and a snow storm is headed this way. We have been extremely dry this winter and hopefully we get more winter before fire season starts soon! Lots of forest fires these past years.

Are you enjoying a nice warm day out there today?

Yes my kitten is very curious. He is always into everything. He is like a child,I constantly have to get onto him. He has learned that when his name is said in a certain tone of voice that he better stop whatever he is doing. I love birds and quail just do not live long ough considering I get attached to them. A budgie is actually a perfect idea. I love their color range and size. I tend to prefer male animals because I feel like it's an better bond. I have a better bond with my male quail that the female. Maybe that's normal. Actually, I would of preferred to have had an actual winter this year. The weather is up and down. Last week we had 70 degree days as well as 30 degree. I would b in shorts one day and in a thermal coat he next. This weekend was was a 70 and 75 degree weekend yet next week's for cast is looking like highs into the 50s each day. Prior years we lays got snow in thus time of year and always had a cold winter. This winter has just felt like spring. It has even confused the outside plants. They start blooming aand budding because we get a 70 degree week then the next week they are frozen. My quail stay in a controlled temperature environment so they never know about this crazy weather . My elder quail tends to love warmth so I have to keep it toasty for him.

I have noticed with parrots that males can make better pets in the sense they can be less aggressive. Females tend to be the ones that pick the males and they can be bossy. LOL So yes, if you have the choice, go with a male parrot. BUT...you can't tell the gender when they are babies. Some places on line can sex them with blood and feathers, I have never had it done, but you could get a check on them first. Either way, either sex would be enjoyable I am sure.

We have been in a drought for about a decade and of course with climate change, we are much warmer than we should be. Anyone that doesn't believe in climate change should come to New Mexico. LOL Our landscape is changing before our eyes and fast. Not enough rain or snow, way too warm than normal. It's awful!

BUT...we do have some snow flying today. 4 inches are expected over night. I sure hope so, we do need the moisture. Over all we are about 15 degrees warmer each season than we have ever been. Extremely drier than we have ever been too.
