Sounds like dogs killed your flock. Only a Dog or Dogs kill 50 birds. Skunk smell may mean they tangled with the skunk too. Too bad we cant breed chickens that can spray like a skunk! The feeding is most likely someone feeding on free pre-killed food. Racoon, Skunk or other. very sorry for your loss. Best wishes in catching the killers. Dogs may come back looking for more fun. Keep your eyes open.

Opps should have read the latest post. Well not my first time "jumping the gun". Guess that answers a question for me as well. It seems a Fox will kill more than it eats Though I am supprised it will kill 50. Now I need to rethink my chicken pen. As I have a fox outside it daily.

Kill what? the chickens, no that would be the fox on page 7. Or did u mean the fox? which i would have taken great pleasure on killing it myself after 50 chickens down.

Oh my gosh!! Wow, that kind of looks like when a Jack Russell Terrier attacked exactly 20 of our pullets and one rooster. All tiny dogs can get in small coops and jump really high, even if the perch is 5 feet off the ground. Here are some tips:
If you kept the chickens indoors, try fencing off that area with a baby net to keep dogs and/or cats from coming in the coop. Also, you might want to get a humane animal transporter to check your house AND your yard/forest for coons or skunks, then have them removed and moved to a far-away forest. Your chickens should be safe if you do both.
If your chickens are outdoors, make sure that the top netting is strong and that the wire on the sides are firm and small, making sure no coon or skunk gets in. If you want to, you can make a coop "hatch" where you make a slide that goes up and down to keep predators out and chickens in at night when they go in.
Hope that helps!
