I've done a variation of that idea.

I had an opening about the size of a magazine in the front door of oour coop to let the chickens have access. To keep the predators out, at night, I installed a make-sift "Doggy Door" with a piano hinge and a latch on it.

The only drawback was the fact that I had to get outside fairly early to open that door or our Rooster would get cabin fever and raise a heck-of-racket.

I'm so so glad you caught what killed your chickens. I think I'll be putting wire on the top of the chicken run now! So sorry for your loss

Beautiful fox! Did you catch him inside the coop? If so, WOW, he was a determined fox! I knew they would scale a fence if they couldn't go under, but I never thought he would scale a fence and then chew through the netting at the top.

Keep the trap set! Never know when there will be more or what else you'll catch.

Make sure they're up to date on their rabies and distemper shots!! Rabies has variable incubation periods (2-8 weeks) before an animal shows signs or symptoms.
Distemper incubation period is around a week, and a bite from an infected animal isn't necessary to transmit the disease.

I have a family of foxes behind my house. So far my dog is keeping them at bay.
I better get to work on my second chicken coop. I dont want to lose my chickens that are using an old dog igloo for a home.
Scary.

I am sooo sorry about your loss.

That is a huge amount of chickens to lose, and a huge amount of meat to go to waste. I'm glad you found the problem and were able to take care of it.

On the other hand, please don't be too mean to the foxes. Remember, they are hunting because they are hungry. They have families to feed too. They don't understand property rights.

I'm not saying you shouldn't dispose of them. Just try to be compassionate about it.

Personally, I do not try to kill the wildlife. I go to great measures to protect my flock--they spend nights in chain link runs, with wire mesh under and over (not chicken wire--I use hardware mesh), and no opening larger than 2". Around the bottom two feet is more hardware mesh, to prevent little paws from reaching through and grabbing a sleeping duck. I still occasionally lose a duck to a fox or raccoon. I hate it, but I also am aware of just how little territory is left to wildlife, especially predators, any more, and I'm reluctant to make our area less friendly to them.

Anyway, I'm not judging what you did. Just trying to put another spin on the situation.

I hope you're able to prevent any future attacks. That really is a heartbreaking loss.

had one of these tackle my young goat, heard the goat raising hell, turned my bulldog out it chased the darn thing to the 5 foot fence where it jumped it with about 2 feet to spare, never thought a fox would try a goat,, know now
