5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Im hoping to recieve mine Thursday so I can set them friday or saturday. We arent going to be home new years and it easier to have a chick sitter than rely on someone to mess up my hatch

Where are you getting the Lorps from?

I took you out of the list but if you have an oops and some hatching eggs "happen" to fall into the bator, let me know.....:gig

I got them from a local feed and seed. They sell chicks until September, but they didn't sell out this year. I got the lucky remaining chicks ;)
A few may accidentally slip and fall in my incubator. They may even turn it on on their way down!

Quote: I have 2 smooth hens in from different blood lines, trying to add new blood to them. I will take the splits and breed back to the father and hope for more Silkied Feathered. I hope you try them they are gorgeous.
I don't even know what I bought on Amazon this morning I'm was in some stupid zone, some of it went fast and now I'm trying to stay off it
I really might have to do that!! That would take care of my lack of a true blue egg.

Quote: Yep!

So we are having a little heat wave this week 60/40F (compared to last wk30/10F) & today my HBR tried to convince one of his ladies it is springtime.
I have noticed her comb getting progressively redder since they finished moulting, & I was thinking I'm going to have a few empty spaces in the turner
soooo go Mr. HBR impress your lady. But she would have none of it, squaked, jumped and ran away, so apparently she is not aware of the need to lay some fertile eggs this week for NYDH.
Anyone think the put a little pepper in her food trick might we worthwhile??

This pic is from about Sept. Roo is a yr now & looking nicer.

I'm kind of joining in unintentionally. I had a hen go broody.... so I'm letting her set. Will see how it goes. She started end of November.... We shall see what happens. So.... if it's successful, it'll be early, but I'm thinking positive thoughts!!!

I have added you to the list!

What are you setting under her?

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and advice. when the eggs came in the mail 4 were smashed and had gotten some others dirty. I know you are not supposed to wash your eggs so i tried to gently wipe some of them down. They all had detached or saddle shaped egg cells so I tried not turning them for the first week and leaving them point down. My temperatures were pretty steady until i raised the humidity at lock down then they dropped. Humidity was an issue I tried to do a "dry hatch" winter hear though the air is less then 20% so I had to keep adding water.
