5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Going to have to get going in a hurry if I am going to be part of this. Looking for eggs now.

It should be interesting to see how the cold affects them . . . I took some eggs from that pullet that Jean said I should show out of the refrigerator to set, so we will see. Might have some BW Ameraucana chicks for you if the rooster did his job and she has been in with him long enough

You know I would be delighted!

It's beginning to look a LOT like Christmas…...

YAY!! All 3 boxes of eggs picked up today, 36 shipped eggs and only 3 loose air cells and 2 detached…feeling pretty lucky. My Genesis 1588 is hanging steady at 97.5 degrees, so a quick read through the manual is in order to figure out how to bring that temp up a smidge is in order. Looks like I got quite a bit of reading to catch up on….
You got such great results - how were your eggs packed?

It is terribly cold!

We hit a record low here in Davis. UCD sent us a broken pipe warning--Since it rarely freezes here, plastic pipes are used for water supply without insulation or heaters.

We will have a PVC pipe shortage here soon.

I hold them upside down and pluck until you can see the vent ( up for one sex down for the other) so the parts can "kiss" as they say.

For silkies it is usually around 10 feathers. Ill hold them like this semi regularly so it dosnt worry them as much. They protest a little but it lasts for a while and after the initial time they grow in at different speeds so you are only doing one or 2 at a time and they don't complain.

I have a question regarding placement of our incubator. We heat with wood only. Yes, this normally works fine in our part of CA as passive solar will heat the house 1/2way and wood the rest. Right now it is excessively cold and we are having to keep our living quarters blazing hot to keep the bedrooms up to 60. Where is the best spot for our incubator? Will it be affected by outside temp? Genesis HB 1588. First time hatchers - with odd questions.

They were shipped all the way from TN to Idaho. I ordered a mix but are labeled CCL they are white/cream colored
CCL? Crested Cream Legbar? The eggs should be blue. Perhaps they are a type of Leghorn -- I'm forever guessing with these acronyms!
