5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Is that true!? What is the science behind that? That would be cool.

I don't think it is reliably true no. I have heard a number of variations on the temp determining sex by killing one or the other. But think about it. If this was a reliable method for ensuring you only got pullets to hatch, don't you think the big hatcheries would be using it all the time? Out of the fridge eggs I hatched last month I'm pretty sure I have a fairly even mix of pullets and cockerels. I don't know for sure of course, but there are pretty good signs.

I am going to put some trader joes and whole foods eggs in the bators as a science experiment. I bought a dozen yesterday and will purchase one more Tuesday
are they even fertile? ive never thought of buying their eggs!!! thats a great idea!!! I want to see what they come out like. maybe leghorns?

I wish there was a store around here that had fertile eggs :( I would LOVE to toss some in and see what popped out. I think it would be lots of fun.

The carton says fertile, but the first dozen I bought last week were all infertile. Whole foods has brown eggs and trader joes has white (near my house anyway) in testing the whole foods batch now. Been in bator since the 4th to check fertility.

I ordered a dozen assorted bantam eggs that are going to be delivered sometime the week of December 9th so maybe I'll get lucky and they'll come in time to do their 24hr settling and make it into the incubator in time for the hatch-a-long.

Let me know if you are joining!

Add the eggs as soon as they warm up to room Temperature. Let them rest in the incubator for the first 3 to 7 days, big end up with no turning. That allows the embryo to recover from shipping. Age of the egg is very important for shipped eggs.

I want to join, I really do. But I don't even have a bator and we worry about hatching roosters. Ugh, I really want to join!

Roosters can be sold on Craigs list and some feed stores will take them.

Give in to the temptation.....
