Nonono I didn't mean freezing live little chicks... I meant freezer camp as in raising them until they have some meat and then eating them... That is what we do with all extra roos (or any roos that don't behave themselves suitably).
I know!!! I just read all this and began balling!!!

my breeder gave us 22 silkie eggs, he didn't want them so we bought them from him. we made a deal that he would take any pullets and cockerels our coop couldn't hold. im hoping we wont have to resort to giving him the birds but we may just have to.

our coop is somewhat small, we have 5 chickens in it now....any of you think of the max number this may be able to hold> PLMK!

we may have to build an a frame coop for the new silkies and put eggy and marshie to go in there with them....here they are:

so yeah.....if you guys have an awesome homemade coop recommendation, Pm me that if you can!!!

Bantamberry, I am LOVING your coop!!

It's snowing away here in Southeastern PA… there is currently a lull and we are headed out for some milk at the Costco…wish us luck!

This is my Popcorn. Love LOVE love this girl…she's half silkie and smart as a whip, a great broody

As for culling roosters..... I had never done it before, but I read, and watched vedios on the internet and thought maybe I could try it. I rehomed all of them except 3 (I had 12) and in one afternoon, figured it out and had some pretty nice looking chicken for the freezer. I made chicken noodle soup the other day and I have to say it is the best I EVER tasted.
I hate to have to take a life, but on a farm an animal has it's place..... the hens provide food through eggs and the roos through meat.

what types? lovely colors!!!

Look who poked her head out to meet me this morning............8 eggs to go Auntie has faithfully been helping set the eggs.......but Mom won't share the hatching. Kept all the eggs to herself......... Sun rise this morning. Camera did not do the colors justice
These pics are AMAZING! MrsPJ: love the pic of the homemade turner, I use styrofoam egg cartons cut way down and a hole cut in bottom for lockdown as I've read that the cardboard egg cartons can wick the moisture out. Threedog: I believe someone posted on this thread that days 4-7 are the most important for turning?...not sure
