5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Local keets hatched very nicely for me. They are living in the country. The chicks were very fast! They can live quite nicely on their own but can be a problem getting them to live with chickens. I would set up a separate coop for them.
Just set 42 Delaware over Delaware, Cuckoo Marans, and Australorp eggs. Might remove the one by the motor that isn't sitting right in the slot. Never filled the bator before, so not sure how that works. Seems like it might cook laying against it.

I added you to the list!
The white ones turn out nice! I kept this girl, she lays a beautiful olive egg!
Very nice looking OE!

Quote: I got them for the quick turnaround and great egg production. Granted, the eggs are smaller but I consistently get an egg a day. They mature at 8 weeks and the hens start laying around 6 weeks. My husband and my mother also love the taste of fried quail so we got them as meat birds for the family also. The chicks that just hatched were my third round of incubating. We started off with about 22 quail (14 were hens) in late July, hatched our first batch of 26 eggs on October 26th, our second batch of 90 eggs on November 12th and this third batch of 96 eggs started hatching just this past Monday. Not all of the eggs have finished hatching but they're close.

I started getting eggs from our first batch of hatchlings late last week which would have made them six weeks old. They are very prolific layers and breeders. I'm working on building up my stock now so I'll have plenty of layers for eggs and will also have plenty of meat birds for the family.

I also have 13 chickens and got them mostly for the eggs but their egg production has slowed since it's been colder but I still get quail eggs everyday.

I got my eggs set today! 16 eggs, some leghorns, some EE's, and some OE's. I can't wait for them to hatch! My birthday is the ninth, so I'm debating setting a couple more eggs in a few days so I can have birthday chicks. We'll see :D Edit: picture now posted for best hatch rate contest!

It is an amazing experience too!

it really is!! my aunt has always had chickens (until the predators won) and my neighbors have had chickens for a few years now, but it really took me until i had my own that i was solely responsible for, to really appreciate them. now i sit outside for hours on my days off just watching them :)

Me too! I just sit on my lawn chair on a nice warm sunny day, with a good book and a drink right in the middle of the yard, while they free range all around me.

its extremely relaxing!! until they wander too far and you have to heard them back home lol. I try not to bring my cell phone out with me, or at least just leave it in my pocket, its nice to spend some time away from the world :)

I love sitting out in nice weather and watching "chicken tv". They are so fun to watch. I find it very relaxing and they make me laugh all the time.

I do same I also take a bag or cup of grapes and make them jump into my lap for the treat they love them.

This is why I love BYC... I feel NORMAL here!

The neighbors are always looking my way when they drive by and I'm with the chickens... I tell myself they're admiring my beautiful chickens.

I just went to close my coops for the night, and I HAVE A BROODY! My Silkie hen is sleeping on the nest. I am going to fence her off and give her fresh eggs tomorrow so she'll also be participating in the hatch-a-long, even though she'll be a day late

Yay, a Broody!

Some of my neighbors like to hear the "farm" noises.

I feel at home here among the chicken crazy people. Setting and hatching eggs and not really knowing what to do with all the babies coming off. Gonna try to sell mine, but not sure if there will be any takers during the cold weather.
