5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I am in total awe! We are Day 5 today, and just candled. I have 21 eggs from DMRippy and 11 of our own (which have been 100% fertile for 2 months). The shipping box was smashed in two corners, but her fabulous magic sticky bubble wrap saved these babies...because her eggs are doing better than my fresher, non-shipped eggs!!! My two green eggs are great, but not all my browns.

Of course I can't see into the 9 shipped Marans, but of 12 CCL/super blue layers...at least 8 had the cutest ever chickie embryos with dark eyes and veins everywhere.

Packing makes a very big difference. That is great news!

I set 11 purebred SFH eggs from my flock this morning a little before noon (my iPad was out of juice, so I did not get a photo but will tomorrow) since we had some errands, and all was well. Bator had been running perfectly in the closet, maintaining temperature just fine. Came home this evening, and the temp had spiked to 104. UGH. It was probably related to the heater coming on -- we have it set to come on twice a day, same times, and it keeps the house reasonable -- but gosh....why didn't it do this over the weekend versus only now when the eggs went in the bator! I was so irritated. Now I'm remembering why I quit hatching when the heater or AC get turned on.

Hope they do OK. A few of my other hatches have had temperature spikes and done OK, but none so early.

It's fine now. Humidity is slightly low, which is funny considering our current weather, but it will work out.

@SunnySkies I know what you mean. I did great when I wasn't fighting the house heating unit in late spring & summer. I set 49 eggs for the hatchalong today, of which 8 are SFH :)
& we are to have overnight temps outdoors of 23F so the heat pump keeps coming on & I'm afraid to go to sleep while the eggs have been in there only 6hrs still coming up to temp. I moved it to a closet for this NYDH, which will keep the cats from sleeping on it, blocking air flow & bumping the temp dial & otherwise messing w/ it. But I'm wide eyed about it atm, I want to see steady right on temps over several hrs b/f I call it safe to sleep...but I'm getting kinda napish w/ purring cats on my lap...

I hope the temp stays down for you. The eggs may not have gotten to 104. It depends on how long it was that hot.

Are you using a still air?

They finally got our gas turned back on!

It is still freezing in here though, so I will get an updated pic of my 28 eggs set as soon as I thaw out some.

So happy for you! I would not want to be without heat! Can you imagine that family that was lost in the mountains in Nevada? They were so smart to use heated rocks to stay warm. Kept a fire gong in a tire. Wow.
Going to keep trying to ... catch up now! Maybe you will have your photo of your eggs by the time I get through all of this!

Picked up my eggs today! Yippee! Thanks to the generosity of Sunnyskies and someone from Pet Chickens of Virginia, I ended up with... 38 eggs! Yowza!

There are EEs, OEs, Silkies, Cochin x Silkie, Marans, SFL x RSL...that's all I can remember. It's going to be fun rotating and turning the next 7 days until I can toss some. But I'm super excited! Here's my photo for the hatch rate contest. All snuggled into my homemade incubator. I set them at 7:30pm east coast.

Winchester VA?! I used to live there..back in the 60's! I loved VA. Also lived in Stephen City, back when it was the boonies. Really loved it there..that's where my love for chickens started..my grandmother had them. :) Bet Winchester has grown too!
