5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Sleep well. I mean tight. Or however well is for you. Get some of those Christmas packages wrapped tomorrow, will you? lol...I know that's what I'll be working on.
Ugh present wrapping.... I have not wrapped one present and my kids keep asking when I'm going too. Tomorrow I will wrap....

Things just keep coming up. At least I bought the gifts. I only have around 50 to wrap...... I think that is why I am dreading it so bad.

WOW!! 1,000 chickens. That is absolutely crazy and not one frizz, that sucks.
Good luck in finding one, If I lived in the same country I'd give you some frizzle eggs to hatch

32 Silkie eggs
3 BCM
3 OE
(shhh I secretly love the BCMs and OEs to, don't tell the other chickens)
I love your chicken Cornflake she is wild and she has a great name!
hahah, I won't. Why so little BCM and OE eggs if you like the so much? The colour of those eggs is amazing!!
Thanks, she has had many names but that's my fav.

I love her!! She looks like a Buff Brahma under a hair dryer

That's the best description of her I have ever heard.lol.

We lost our one and only frizzle.. it was a bantam and could get through thre coop fence. Her and one of her friends got out at night tried tonget a drink from the "duck pond" and fell in... saved one, but the frizzzle was long gone.

It was the wife's favorite and will have to find more...
That truly sucks, I am sorry to hear. Our little banties can to escape but they always make their way home.
I'm glad you managed to get at least one of them. Good luck on tracking another one down

Well I wont be winning any hatching contest. I need another rooster I thought this stud was all over the girls but I have 6 clears then again I think she just started to lay. I know when I had 9 ladies he was fine this summer. I lost a few birds and got some new ones I don't think the new ones are bowing down for him. That or he just don't want his junk out in the cold lol.

So far I'm sitting at a 22.87% loss already. the 6 clears and 2 blood rings. Here is a pic of my blood rings I knew there was some talk about them before but this is what mine normaly look like.

On a plus note it looks like all my golden cuckoo marans are going strong so may get to try out sexing them by head spots.

Well you're still above me and my 92% loss. My one rooster has yet to fertilize one egg. I'm setting another batch Saturday so he can hopefully redeem himself. Although I will give him that has/had mites really bad. I gave him a bath a couple days ago and I swear there were hundreds if not thousands of those nasty things. So he got two baths right in a row and then into the basement. Everyday I've been hosing him down in permethrin. Seems like there's a lot less already. This would of had to happen in a matter of about three weeks because I know he didn't have them when I bought him in early November and when I last looked him over I didn't see anything. They were all at the base of his tail and down towards his vent

Oh I do.

They have containers of oyster shell always available and they get all egg shells from eggs we use. I was just offering a solution to someone's ? of how they could get enough calcium if it wasn't available to buy any more.

Greetings all, I have to admit I've been tempted to candle earlier than I usually do but am holding off until Saturday. To distract myself, I decided to shop cabinet incubators. Good grief they are pricey! I am determined to build one, and anyone (hint hint CC!) who has done, any instructions/pictures/drawing sure would be helpful. Would a good start be a defunct fridge or wine cooler, or is it better to build from wood?

..

Wine coolers and refrigerators are a great way to start. Wine coolers have nice windows too.
I have a bunch of pictures of mine. If I get time I'll upload some.

I would check your hens over well. If he had that many, I'm sure he shared. Maybe he had eggs on him when you got him.

I had one cracked egg. I haven't culled any others. I usually don't till the last week since I can't see much in them anyway. About all I do is keep track of their weight and have faith. The faith thing is accompanied by more confidence this time with my new thermometers.

My Olive Egger is just a pullet and started laying right before this hatch alongs set date, a couple of her eggs froze in our bad weather. And my Marans had just started laying again after getting out of her broodiness. I just set them for fun and to check fertility to make sure everyone is doing there job.

Thanks!

I would still give them free choice Oyster shell calciuim. It is very in expensive and comes in large bags. I go through one a year about.

Oh I do.  ;)   They have containers of oyster shell always available and they get all egg shells from eggs we use.  I was just offering a solution to someone's ? of how they could get enough calcium if it wasn't available to buy any more.  :D

Yeper doodles..you are going to be a day late, I'll be a day early.   Still, come on and ask questions, answer questions, or just follow along for the fun..because some of these guys and gals can get silly at times.   But I never. do.

No never.  Of course not...  :lau

Your chicks are going to be "so last year" then;) :lau .
I will defiantly be following this thread, so many friendly people already.
YEAH! It will be interesting to see who get more chickies.
It's day 8 for me toady but I put my eggs in late ( 8:00pm ). It's only 1:00pm

:yuckyuck   This cracked me up. :gig

X2!

I candled last night, pulled 22 clears, I only have one BBS Orp left, sooooo sad :(

The fact that you say your humidity has been at 16% for 2 days makes me think you have an Acurite. That's what I use, and they don't read below 16%. So, it could be lower than 16%, which is strange with aircells that small. Curious... Since the eggs are yours, and if you put them in very fresh they would have smaller aircells than an older or shipped egg. I wonder, are they very hard thick shelled eggs?
Yep, Acurite from walmart. Yep, I put them in fresh...4 were from Wednesday's clutch laid, 6 from Thursday, set Thursday. Yep, they have thick shells.

Yep, yep, and yep. :)

Agree on the mites, I'd check the hens carefully. I had one with them last summer, came on very fast and almost did her in. I treated every chicken here, repeated a week later. I check often now. I was horrified at how overrun that little hen was, and how fast she was going down.

CC thanks for mentioning the glass door on wine coolers, hadn't even thought about that. I told DH I want to do this, and now he's thinking about it - he is MUCH better at this kind of thing than I am, and has the basic concept of what needs to happen. I guess I would appreciate any recommendations on things like where to buy the parts I would need to convert a cooler to a warmer.

I candled eggs that were supposed to have moved to the hatcher last night - these eggs were overcooked the first two weeks. Of 23 eggs, one appears it will hatch, 3 have a slight chance, the rest were goners, and obvious goners. I had not candled earlier because I knew of the temp issue and was too depressed to see. The good news is the eggs set a week later look like they have a much higher chance of survival - of 16 set, 11 are developing normally. Fingers crossed. Tomorrow I'll know how the NYD eggs are doing.
