5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Woo Hoo - finely got a light that I can see veins with!!

So, of course I had to candle my ? eggs. There were 7, 5 of those I can now see veins and movement even the green one. The other two are clear.

So of 29 eggs set I have 27 wiggly little chickies growing! Someone good with numbers please help me figure percentage I'm thinking like 93%, please let me know if this is wrong.
93.1% if they all hatch. Very goodnews!

For the little lone chick, if you can't get a friend -- set up a small mirror behind the food dish, so when the chick eats it sees another chick eating too, the chicks seeing each other eat encourages them to eat enough food. Just be sure the food is NOT reflected in the mirror from the chick's point-of-view or it can get confused, peck the mirror & go hungry. Good Luck for your cutie :)

I never thought of that!

We had one very aggressive quail chick we had to seperate. Put a mirror with him and he could never catch that chick or peck him! He stopped liking getting smacked in the face by the mirror and became a nice boy once he was reunited with his siblings.

Someone was talking about grit. In the summer we will use chicken coop cleanings to liquid fertilizer tomatoes. We let it soak in buckets for a day the dilute it and apply. At the bottom of the buckets it always surprises me how much sand and grit is in them when we clean up. If you wanted to check if they are getting enough grit this is w good way. Water it all down and do a fecal analysis. May be a little to hands on for some. The smell is on the hands for a little while.lol

that's a good idea! thank you!

and congrats on the new chicks and roosters!

Can anyone tell me if this is effective for scaly leg mites too? I just don't seem to be able to get rid of it - if I clear it up it comes right back.

Thanks

No, not for leg mites. For that you have to suffocate them with an oil.

Solid Crisco or Vaseline both work well. Just rub them on a couple times per week until you see improvement. The mites smother pretty quickly but it will take a while for the damaged skin to flake off & regrow.
